Middle schooler in hospital - what to get?

Anonymous
A close friend's rising 6th grader is in the hospital - not with COVID - with an infection. We'd like to drop off a little gift for them. Any ideas? What does a 6th grader want? He's got all the toys etc. that he could possibly want. A gift bag of goodies??

He may be on a hospital diet, or unable to eat much, so I'd check with the parents about goodies.

Super funny talking card. No food. Book?

MadLibs, though ask if it hurts to laugh first. A good stuffed animal even for a 6th grader.

Rubik’s cube, magazine about his favorite subject, comfy headphones, sudoku, gift card to Apple store for new apps, board game (Mastermind is small), choose your own adventure books, funky socks (pizza, emojis, etc.) or slippers, a fleece blanket with a favorite team logo.

When my son had surgery, all he wanted was food. Family dropped off puzzles and games that he never used but he talked forever about the giant bag of chips his buddy brought. Ask the parents but I’d say comfort junk food. Your child will know what he likes.

20:10 again. If no food, then ask your child if they play together on Xbox, PlayStation, Fortnite, etc and go with a gift card to one of those. My DS and his friends exchange the ones for Xbox when they give each other birthday gifts. I don’t know what to buy so I bring him to Walgreens and tell him to pick out the correct one.

Honestly I was in the hospital at 6th grade and the best thing that happened was they allowed kids to IM each other that were sick through the smart computer/TV.
So kid interaction will be a huge factor as well as a sweet card, I poured over them in the hospital. If you’re part of any other friend groups I’d ask if you can drop of some cards from friends, esp if others aren’t allowed/able to visit.

If you want to do food, just ask the family first.

I might put together a small and lightweight goodie bag-something easy for thing to bring home when it's over. I would get

- Some silly masks or sports team masks. When my brother was recently in the hospital they didn't give him a mask and he liked to have one while nurses and doctors visit. The one he had with him was getting dirty.

-Goofy singing card

-Sports cards if he is a collector

-Funny slippers that have good traction, sports socks or cool socks

-Sports illustrated if he likes that

-whatever treats/snacks the family will let you give

-Book of corny jokes if he likes corny humor

-Comic books if he is into that

Invisible ink game book. Used to love those in camp care packages.
