Travel soccer during covid?

Anonymous
Super confused. Should I be doing travel soccer for my 7 yr old this Fall? Its always been his favorite sport and before Covid we were planning to. But Im not really into the idea of going to with different areas etc during this time. What are other people doing??

Since no seven year old needs travel soccer, it's pretty easy. Social distance and kick a ball around in the yard.

Mac vs. PC
Ford vs. Chevy.
Canon vs Nikon
Trump vs. Biden

The answer to your question is about as clear as the answer to any of the above questions.

People are doing all sorts of different things. Some are gung-ho get on the pitch virus be damned, some are 'maybe next year'. There really isn't a correct answer: just a bunch of yelling.

Do what you feel is best.

1. Kids don't seem to suffer too badly from covid. However serious it may or may not be for older people, it appears to be less dangerous for them than 'flu. + there is a fair bit of evidence that younger kids don't spread it much either.
2. 7 year old boys need to play sport.
3. 7 year old travel soccer teams don't typically travel very far.

There is no need for a 7-year old to feel left behind. Certainly this season.

Don't think left behind is the issue. Seven year old boys need to play sport outdoors with friends. That's part of being a seven year old boy. It's not good for them not to be able to do this. It doesn't have to be soccer. Maybe he can take up tennis if you are truly worried about the virus. But a 7 year old boy should be doing something.

Completely agree with this.

Consider rec soccer and you can hold him if they do any scrimmages. Just let him do practices.

Or agree with tennis camps or swimming lessons.

Definitely sign him up for rec soccer if it's his favorite sport. Even if it's just practices and scrimmages, it'll be really good for him.

The cost for Rec is minimal. Hence, let him try it this season. If he’s bored it too good for it, switch him in the Spring.

I didn’t send my boy back. There was barely any precaution or the coach and players didn’t follow any safety rules. No masks on the coaches, players, or parents. Definitely closer than 6 feet on and off the field. Backpacks, water bottles, etc piled here and there. Kids spit as usual.

Sign him up for rec. You're not going to do any traveling. Kids should be playing.

It's not necessary for a 7 year old. I'm not sure what to do about my 11 year old, who has played travel since he was 9. To him, it is the most important thing in his life, but I don't feel it is safe right now. Soccer involves contact, although in a more limited way than something like football. We paid for the season, but I'm thinking of just eating the $.

We joined another team this season but had to withdraw due to COVID. We were too worried about our DD getting it as my DH has high blood pressure and diabetic.
