MCPS here and considering other options. Distant learning just did not work for my young ES child. Interested to hear what others might do? I’ve heard people switching to private (although private schools reopening remains to be seen), hiring full time tutors, creating pods, and simply homeschooling.
What are you doing? |
| Homeschooling. I have never thought I would come to this decision, but homeschooling. I have two kids who are both in ES. |
| 3 days a week in aftercare-based school age program. Sports “camps” after school if available. Likely tutor or similar the other 2 days for an hour or two. Very active boys in 1st and 4th. |
| Homeschooling for K. We'll try DL for 3rd grade. |

Howard County ES. Spring term wasn't good (albeit was significantly better than what friends in MCPS were saying their kids were going through). But the new plan from HCPSS looks like it is acceptable and we're going to give it a try. We will have about 3-4 hours per day synchronous (teacher-led Google Meet sessions with new material taught) learning and additional hour or so of asynchronous learning (Dreambox math, LexiaCore spelling/grammar, or teacher assigned work). There will be 2 related arts (art, music, health, PE, media and technology) sessions per week that will be synchronous.
So, we're going to at least give it a try for the fall term and see how well the kids do and how much they learn. We'll decide as we get closer to the holidays what we'll do for the Spring based on what Spring term will look like and how well the kids learn, but we're at least willing to give the new system a try. |
MCPS was able to get their DL up and running right away. Still angry that Howard County started so long. Was not good for my kids. |
Sorry, should say still angry that Howard County took so long to start/waited so long. |
| Sending my kids to a "learning hub" hosted by KidsCo. They are basically doing DL in their elementary school..for $300/kid/week. It's not an ideal situation at all. |
| Homeschooling. Probably send 5th grader to a math center and get a tutor for reading/writing and for my 2nd grader with ADHD. |

Re: “learning hub”
$300 a week, so $1200 a month, then $12,000 for the school year? Is that correct? OMG What do you get for that amount? |
|
My daughter works at a learning hub place part time. It is all day child care with lunch and snacks. She sets up computers. Makes sure all kids logged in, staff is there to help with school work, they serve lunch and after school activities
She just graded a MCPS HS so familiar with DL. Kids are little k-5 |
| Sadly I think many elementary schoolers will be left home alone this fall. |
