babymoon - suggestions for carribbean resorts?

Anonymous
I'm desperately trying to plan a getaway this spring before the baby comes in August. With work commitments and other things, it's tough figuring out when to go. What I really have no energy for is figuring out where to go. Usually I make a huge project out of planning a vacation, but I really can't deal wiht it right now. I just want some good recs for resorts people enjoyed.

I'm thinking Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, or maybe Bermuda. Trying to keep it to one direct flight - but open to suggestions.

Any thoughts?

I guess it depends on how much you want to spend, but the Sandals resorts might be an option. You could do the Nassau one and try to get a direct flight there.

Have a great time and congrats on the baby!

What are you looking for--all-inclusive, total comfort, or something a little more off-the-beaten-path (but still relaxing/comfortable!)?

If B, I stayed in a fabulous tiny little place in Mexico a few years ago and LOVED it. Cabanas la Conchita, in Tulum, about 2 hours south of Cancun. You'll get your own beautiful private cabana with a huge bedroom, queen bed, large open tile bath (ask for cabana #1 if it is available), a tiny but beautiful private beach, a full made-to-order breakfast every morning, and a super-helpful english-fluent staff. There are tons of awesome restaurants within walking distance or a short drive (esp. Zamas and Posada Margherita), and lots of neat things to do nearby (the ruins at Tulum, the cute little town of Tulum, the natural waterpark Xel-Ha, and the ruins at Coba, to name a few). But you can also just relax in your hammock or on the beach all day--we did a lot of that too!

The downsides are no electricity or air conditioning and you do have to sleep under a mosquito net (but this didn't bother us; you do get a room fan from 6pm to ~7am and lights from 6pm to 10pm), no pool and the beach isn't really great for actual swimming (but others within walking distance are), and you'll need to rent a car.

I absolutely loved it--was more personal and immediate than a huge all-inclusive, and I would absolutely go back, even (especially!) pregnant.

If you like the general idea but are stuck on the lack of air conditioning, there are several other similar places along the same strip in Tulum that do have air, but I can't personally vouch for them. Tripadvisor.com is a good place to get info.

Like the PP, I LOVED tulum but stayed where we had electricity, etc, though it was still less "resort' and more 'eco touristy' than the big clubs. We stayed ina gorgeous place called Vida Nueva di Ramiro--had a gorgeous cabana on the beach, private, with a great deck, walked to the restaurants on the beach, etc.,. We also saw ruins, went snorkeling, kayaking, etc. we are considering going back when our baby is 6 months. There were lots of places to stay in tulum--from very bare bones to eco-chic. I would not recommend staying in town, though--the beach is so gorgeous.

Here is a recent Wash Post article giving suggestions for adult (ie, not for kids/families) resorts in the Carribean/Mexico that are non-stop flights:

thanks all - would be happy to hear more suggestions and I'll check out the article. I'm gearing away from Mexico just because we are a bit nervous with the pregnancy. I'm sure it is totally fine but I don't want to have to worry about drinking the water, etc.
