You have a choice of 6 schools. Which ones are you selecting? |
just a clarification: you want people who are apply to pre-k as out of boundary? or do you want responses from all people applying to pre-k? |
OOB PS or PK. I need to come up with 6 schools and trying to get ideas. |
My kids are beyond preK, but here's how I'd analyze it.
Forget Mann, Lafayette, Key, Janney, Murch, all the slots will go to in bounds. Consider Eaton, Hyde, Stoddert as possible but not probable. I'd research based on last year's # of OOB and pick 1 or 2 to rank high. More likely to get in: West, Shepherd, H.D. Cooke, Ross, Thomson, Takoma. You'll notice my list has no Capital Hill schools as I live in Ward 4 and don't work in that direction. all of these schools are preK, preS is a different questions. Then, I'd apply to Charters, especially for preS, Appletree, Bridges. EL Haynes, Cap City, 2 Rivers. Charters are a different list if you want language immersion. Whatever my inboundary is, unless absolutely unacceptable under any circumstances, I would rank #6. |
6:48 back, forgot Hearst, very good school with high # of OOB slots |
Forget Eaton, Watkins or Peabody. They did not take any OOB for PK the 2009-2010 year. |
It would help to know in which Ward you reside. As there are good possibilites outside the normal five or six schools often raved about on this particular website. |
You don't HAVE to select 6 schools. Do you like your in-boundary school? Is that where you want to go for the upper grades? If so, you probably only need to apply to that school, since your chances there are so much better than at other schools. If not, you really need to spend the next month visiting the schools to see for yourself.
I applied to our in-boundary school and the next closest school, although I don't have any expectation or hope of getting into the OOB school. |
This is not true. I personally know of 3 children who are at Eaton PreK who are OOB. The numbers that were reported were from the initial lottery results - not what the final class make up is. There is A LOT of movement over the summer. |
OOB:
Eaton Hearst Hyde Shepherd Stoddert Thompson Charters: 2 Rivers Appletree Bridges Haynes (not Cap City b/c it doesn't have PS-3) If you want language immersion: Elsie Stokes LAMB Washington Yu Ying Also, there's Tyler. Downsides: DCPS, it's in SW Upsides: PS3 and PK4, Spanish immersion |
Tyler is in SE. I wish it were in SW! |
Yu Ying doesn't have PS-3. |
Charters are not part of the PS3/PRK OOB lottery process. |
Not true! Half my son's pre-k class at Eaton this year is from outside the boundary --many without siblings there...including my son |
Murch also has some OOB kids this year in pre-K; I was just talking with some Murch parents today who verified this. So while it's unlikely OOB kids will get in on the day of the lottery, it sounds like there's lots of movement in the waitlist in the spring/summer. |
