Lopsided Milk Production

Anonymous
Hello,
I wish DCUM had a newly postpartum group...
Anyway, I have been nursing my daughter since she was born (she is almost 7 weeks). She is a good size, is gaining weight and is sleeping well - We seem to have developed our routine. The one small glitch is that my right breast seems to be a bit sluggish and my left breast is producing more milk than I (or my baby) know what to do with. For example, last night, we went out to dinner. I pumped when we got home (the sitter gave her a bottle) and the right side produced about 2 oz where as the left was full at over 5 oz! The last feeding had ended on the right.
Since things are going well, should I just continue and get over the difference in production or is there some way to intervene and try to even myself out? I certainly don't want to diminish my overall milk supply.
Thanks in advance for any tips!

My production was similarly uneven, and I understood from other moms (and maybe from kellymom.com? can't remember) that it's not uncommon. Weirdly, for me, my breasts "switched" around 5 months and the top producer fell quite behind.

I am still pregnant with #1 and don't know the answer to this, but I have heard excellent things about http://www.breastfeedingcenter.org/ as a good resource. That might be a good place for you to start.

I think almost everyone is lop-sided. It never matters with my babies.

Congrats on your new baby and best wishes.

normal. you can do little things to help even them out, like pump the slow side after feeding on it; leave DD on that one longer; offer that side first more often; etc. But it's totally normal.

Another vote for totally normal. My right side was a much bigger producer and as a result, my right breast is now bigger. I'm hoping I can get them to even up with this new baby, but I don't know that I'll have that much control.

Yes, I agree with everyone else. It's pretty common to have one breast that is an over-achiever.

The Breastfeeding Center does indeed have a new mom breastfeeding support group. It is held every Tuesday during the lunch hour, and it is free. You don't need to sign up - just show up with your baby. http://breastfeedingcenter.org/classes.html

Yup -- baby is 3 weeks, and ol' lefty is going nuts. The only issue is I have to watch out for plugged ducts on that side.

I'm the same way. At first my baby preferred my right side, and I would have to pump on the left, because it was too much for her, but now at 10 months she really prefers the left--she will not start on the right side most of the time. So I'm probably two cup sizes bigger on that size.
I remember with my son by the time we weaned he was only nursing on the left side. But they did even out size-wise between pregnancies.

For me, the bigger producer was the 2 cup size smaller one, lol. I got pregnant with DS while nursing DD, I'm hoping they even out when we are done. I have heard for some they don't, more tissue developed and that's it. Yikes.

I don't nurse, just pump. My right boob produces twice as much.
