High school graduate can watch kids - what rate is fair

Anonymous
I have an 18 year old neighbor who graduated high school this year and is attending NOVA online. She is interested in watching a few kids through this fall to avoid having to waitress or work retail. How much is fair for her to watch 2 or 3 kids, elementary age, while they do their distance learning and really just keep an eye on them. Parents are home during the day but are working so just need someone to help out and keep kids from interrupting during meetings. Not looking for tutoring, just babysitting.

Whatever it takes for her to accept the job = what is "fair"

I would say $15-$20 an hour. Definitely $20 if its 3 kids

$20-30 per hour. You are exposing her family to risk and you can ask her to avoid exposing herself to more. You may not think she is as valuable as a tutor but you are getting her for less hours and more flexibility than a babysitter.

+1. If you find someone good, OP, hang in to her and pay her well.

$20/hour for 3 kids?! God you all are cheap AF. You get what you pay for.

I just posted this on the threat above, but I lost out right and left trying to find a nanny. Many of the available nannies on care.com, etc were in there early 20s and not college grads, and getting scooped up quickly. Assuming you can afford $20-25 that's what you should pay because it's likely someone else will.

Are you paying her cash or doing a whole legal thing? Benefits?

$25/hr paid on the books - so realistically a bit more to cover taxes and payroll.

You need to pay her officially so if you fire her when hybrid or regular school resumes, she can get unemployment.

$16-18 is reasonable for a high school graduate.

No. OP will lose her to the neighbor willing to pay $22 for one child. “Reasonable” doesn’t come into play.

OP here

Thanks for the advice. I think we will sit down with her and just ask what she wants. If she lowballs then we will be honest and let her know. I'm definitely thinking in the 20-25 per hour range.

Op again

She wants cash and even if the kids go back hybrid we would keep her for the days they are home so she wouldn't be without the work unless she wanted to.

Keep in mind that she’ll be helping with tech issues and helping with the parts of DL where the kids are supposed to go off and work independently for a stretch and then reconvene with the class.

$20/hour for 3 kids?? What are the ages of the kids? There’s a big difference between 7 and 11, for instance.
