Just Us Kids: Thanks for the money, sucker!

JUK was happy to collect our waitlist fee, but later told us there wasn't a chance we'd get a spot. In 2019, 9 months after collecting our $75, they said "At this time, there are about 100 families ahead of you on the Infant waitlist. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that we'll in the position to offer you a space this summer, but can certainly keep you on the list for any possible openings." Now, it seems they're moving to a new waitlist tool and are going to require people who already paid to get on the list to pay again.

Received today:

Good Morning,

We are in the process of updating our waitlists, as well as changing waitlist programs. BumbleBee, the waitlist software we currently use is going out of business. The new waitlist software is Wait List Plus, and will be active as of August 1.

To help us in maintaining an accurate waitlist, we ask that any families still interested in staying on our waitlist to please re-apply. Families can apply directly from our website: www.just-us-kids.org and will be directed to the new waitlist application. There will be a one-time initial application fee of $100, and an annual renewal fee of $50. Going forward, applications will need to be renewed by August 1 each year.

For those families who have applied to JUK within the past 6 months, please let us know and we can waive the initial application fee to join the new program. Please let us know no later than August 7.

We will soon be working to fill openings for Fall enrollment and will be in touch with families as we move down the waitlists. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Thank you,
Just Us Kids

Got this too. Delusional. I’ve been on the list since 2017! Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

Also $50 annual registration fee? Get bent.

Lots of places are like that. We applied to several and only got a call from one place when our kid was 4.

Crazy. What happened to just having...a list???

Such a scam. I was on the waitlist for that place for 5 years before I was eventually asked if I wanted to remove my (kindergarten) child from the list. Same thing with other downtown centers, though.

The more honest thing would be to just maintain a free waitlist and charge a registration fee.

We paid $200 to get on the list at Le Petite Academy. Decided not to send our son there (it was kind of our back-up option, even before COVID). That hurt, but it was the only place that likely had a spot when we needed it.

Why is anyone paying to be on a waitlist? That is crazy! I would question where the money is going and if you get refunded if you never make it off the list

Where don't you have to pay to be on one?

PP. I’m on at least 10 waitlists and I haven’t seen anywhere that has requested to collect the fee twice and to receive additional money every year. I also am suspicious that they are even open as many daycares in federal buildings have not been able to open.

A lot of places make you pay to stay on the waitlist each year, and it's such a racket, especially for infant rooms because you know the only people who get off infant lists are siblings.

Having people pay a not-insignificant waitlist fee serves the legitimate purpose of disuading them from just signing up to every waitlist in town, instead of the ones they are really interested in, causing a huge administrative burden on the people managing those waitlists. Charging more than once, or yearly, is just wrong.

I made a mistake and paid $125 for the waitlist at St. Albans Early Childhood Center. Before applying, I called and asked about the waitlist and was told it could be a few weeks to a few months. Once we got the number which is 50+ feels more like years or never until we are offered a spot. And our waitlist number increased by a few spots (preferences to alumni, siblings, etc).

Why such secrecy about the number of people on the waitlist?

Ah yes but are half of the mcca programs still closed? Also aren’t all these in MoCo?

But that’s nuts OP!
