Is Brent really bringing back a class per grade for live instruction today?

My older child has an IEP and has really lots ground academically since March. Somebody tell me how my kids' departure from DCPS will help poor kids of color. I was PTA president for two years when our school was still Title 1. PTA raised six figures for the first time last year. Just because every school can't reopen safely right now doesn't mean that the poor kids at Brent, kids with IEPs, ELLs should have to pay. No way.

Congratulations on raising six figures. To be honest, DCPS doesn’t care if you leave. They never have and they never will.

Not PP but your are so naive.

The school and principal will really care when parents who have the means to raise money and contribute leave.

DCPS will care when their PARCC scores at the school decline because the higher performing kids leave and the money that was raised by the PTA to help pay for other things so more fund are available to help the lower performing kids isn’t there anymore.

Correct the school and principal may care. DCPS as a system? No they don’t. And you are fooling yourself if you think you are that important.

They are not reassigning classes and it's up to the teacher to volunteer to come back. There is a virtual option still open and if enough families decide to come back then they're going to split a/b days. Each class is working closely (principal, teachers, and parents) and deciding what is best for their classroom.

Does this mean if your child is in a class whos teacher is definitely not coming interested in in-person then you are out of luck?

There is currently a PK, K, 4th and 5th class at Brent. Different models for different grades, but all with a Brent teacher. The kids were invited based on the criteria DCPS determined, which is FARMs, IEP, and ELL. Brent can also appeal to DCPS if there is a kid who doesn't fit those buckets who the teacher has identified as being in need. If there are left over seats there is a lottery for them within the grade. Brent is working on plans to add classes in the other grades.

Brent parent here. It is really interesting to hear Brent being described on this post. I am a POC and have two kids at Brent. My youngest child’s class has been solidly diverse. My older child has had a combination of demographics but overall less diverse. The school is about 34% non white. As a POC in a school with 4% non white kids, I’m fine with 35%. The teachers (mostly) are really engaged in inclusion practices. Norah could be better- she needs to take a stronger stance but overall makes the effort. And the community has been good. We have a group of diverse friends and I have enjoyed seeing the commitment from so many families to make this an anti racist school. Could there be improvements? Yes. But overall we are happy and our kids are happy.

Parents who don't care for Norah mostly weren't there under Peter Young. Brent was in a real mess several years ago after six years of a leadership vacuum. We'd have left if she hadn't come along.

My kid, who has an IEP, is one of the upper grades CARES classes, a huge help to us right now. Go, Norah, warts and all.
