Are DCPS teachers legally allowed to teach in-person (pods/ tutoring)?

Anonymous
Teachers are the reason schools are closed, and they have an obvious financial incentive to keep them closed. They collect their full salary regardless of whether schools are open and keeping them closed drives up the price of private tutoring which our kids now all need because distance learning is so ineffectual. If schools were open, no one would hire teachers as tutors.

+1. It's just distasteful.

It's also funny how these private pods have essentially re-created the hybrid model, except that we're paying for the same thing twice now. First we pay teachers their full paycheck so they can stay at home and "feel safe." Then we pay teachers a second ransom so they can blow safety in the wind and teach private pods in some stuffy basement.

Teachers tutored long before DL, and will tutor long after. Of course people hire teachers as tutors when schools are open.

How delusional can you get Karen? Teachers are having to do MORE now than before. The reasons schools are closed is because of the executive branch of the US Government (namely the president) who is INCAPABLE of doing anything sensible. Look at states that have reopened -- tons of schools have had to close within days of reopening. Get a grip!

The coronavirus positivity rate in DC is 1.8 percent, which meets every major health organization’s standard for safely reopening schools (they say the positivity rate must be below 5 percent). Schools should be open. The only reason they aren’t is politics.

Tell me why DCPS couldn’t promise PPE, soap, and new ventilation systems-where possible in writing? They said that was their plan but never mandated it.

They had never planned to open. I am a teacher and I do think teachers did play a role but not in the way people think.

What looks better teachers painted as villains or a few dead teachers, that could have been prevented if they either helped ensure safety by spending their precious money or DL. Then there’s the fact pretty much all surrounding counties choose DL and many teachers live there. Then they would have to provide childcare and that could increase spread.

The reasons go on but at the end of the day it is very political and cannot be pinned just on teachers. I’m really, really confused why people keep saying this.

Teachers 100% tutored before Covid, I have friends who had clients pay $70+ per hour. It feels unethical to some now just because of the current situation. Also if teachers don’t pick up these jobs, professors will, regular tutors, grad students, etc.

This thread is absolutely disgusting. Teachers coached and tutored after work hours long before Covid and will continue to do during and after Covid. For that, I am grateful.

Yeah, but teachers also pressured schools to shut down because of covid ("I don't wanna dieee!"). So it's a bit late to talk about pre-pandemic yesteryear.

Question back to you: Do you think teaching a private pod of kids in a crammed basement is safer than if schools had been open?

NP. I would love to know how many DCPS (not private or charter) teacher are actually doing this. I’m a teaching and literally no one I or they know is doing this. I’m at a Ward 3 school and most teachers are disgusted with the concept. I’d love to get a real number on how many teachers there actually are. I’d say less than 100 out of 4,000.

Oh 100% safer. DCPS was not even close to being prepared to open safely. My Ward 3 school can’t even keep toilet paper stocked, there’s no way they were going to have proper ppe each day. Sick kids are sent back to class when parents can’t be reached to come get them. This was not a district that had any business opening up!! A controlled environment tutoring 1-3 kids? It’s not even a fair comparison!!!

+1

It truly is, a lot of emotional and illogical arguments. It’s strange there are 5k teachers in DCPS alone and people are really assuming a majority of teachers are doing pods. I’d be willing to bet there aren’t even 100 pods in DC.

This thread is a way to demonize teachers, it didn’t start that way but it sure is now.

If you think that anyone in the DC government gives even a passing thought to prosecuting teachers for ethics violations, I have a bridge to sell you.

Remember DC rarely prosecutes REAL crime like metro fare evasion or thefts from autos. They definitely arent going to prosecute teachers for making an extra buck.

Nobody is talking about prosecution. People are simply outraged about the galling hypocrisy of a teacher demanding that schools be closed because of safety but then taking the very same damn risk teaching private pods.

Where is your vitriol for the dc parents who will hire DC teachers? Aren’t they part of the problem, too?

How many pods do you think there are?
