Not an actual romance. They had sex a few times, then he sexually assaulted her.

That is an oversimplification. The assault was also not remotely glossed over on the show or in my mind. I feel like the same could easily be said about Angel. In fact not to get into a philosophical buffy wormhole but Angel, soulless, was much crueler and more horrible to Buffy than Spike ever was and Buffy was horrible to Spike in return and never anything but devoted to Angel.

Also a buffy spike shipper.

I'd add Corey and Topanga and Chuck and Blair.

What are you talking about? there is no episode where Angel sexually assaults Buffy-- if you want to say there is then you need to specify it. Also no one said anything about whether the sexual assault was glossed over in your mind.

Angel stalks her for a year specifically using their sexual encounter as grist for the torture mill. What are YOU talking about, have you seen season 2?

he lost his soul because he had a moment of happiness with her (while having sex). That is when he stalks her and mentally tortures her. But they are not in a relationship and he isn't trying to be in a relationship with her at that time.

sorry, spike attempted to rape buffy in her bathroom. There is no comparison.

I feel like again this is a gross oversimplification of the issue. To put both things in context:

Angel and Buffy fell in love and he lost his soul and he emotionally tortured her for an entire year. The fact that he had lost his soul, in the canon/universe/lore of the show hinged on his not having a soul. Basically nothing he did without a soul counted as something 'Angel' did. His soul had to be forced back inside him against his will. And while they were not in a consensual romantic relationship at the time they were ABSOLUTELY in a 'relationship' of sorts. This is a very intense rewriting of history to make Angel look less effed up than he was. He murdered Giles' girlfriend just to eff with their heads. Is that comparable to an attempted rape?

Spike and Buffy gradually developed an intense relationship based on mutual anger/dislike/love/respect that culminated in an unhealthy and aggressive sexual relationship. Spike was soulless during this entire time. While without his soul he became a good-ish person/vampire who loved her very deeply. She treated him like garbage during most of this time, but occasionally like an equal. Their relationship during this time was FREQUENTLY filled with violent consensual sexual encounters. He did attempt to rape her in the bathroom. An experience that showed him that no matter how much he loved her he would never be able to be who she deserved without his soul so he went and fought for his. And won it back. And still came back and loved her and was devoted to her.

You are giving Angel a pass because he lost his soul but forcing Spike to bear the moral responsibility of the mistake he made while soulless. A double standard frequently employed by Angel-philes. But Spike's character arc and persona in general are far more compelling and far more complex and deserving of forgiveness than anything Angel has ever done. Spike sees the evil in himself and uses his own autonomy to become a better man.

My memory is terrible so I don't remember all the details as well as you do - but I will say I would like to sign up for your Buffy graduate seminar please!

Hahaha I was a philosophy major super into buffy at the time and had a lot of feelings about it clearly! It was a great show!
