My son is taking Algebra 1 in 9th grade. Is he doomed?

However, he just finished Algebra 1 honors in 8th grade with an A and Chantilly HS was VERY vocal about kids NOT taking Geo.etry honors over the summer. They were very serious about it so we choose to just take it in Freshman year. Personally, if he gets straight As and takes Calcus senior year that should be good enough for VTU, , Cornell, or some of the other Tier 2 engineering schools.

It's interesting that they are actively discouraging kids from taking Geo Hons in the summer, when nearby schools are offering it. I wonder if it is because the summer Geom. Hons class that kids from your area would be taking is the "on line" version. The version that is offered in my pyramid is in class/live (i.e you have to attend for 6 hrs per day.).

Was that blanket advice, rising by 9th versus rising 10th, or that they don’t have faith in the class their school/system is offering over the summer? Even without the summer class it sounds like your 8th grader will hit Calculus by 12th and would meet any math pre-requisites for honors science classes.

I didn't read every response but is every single one suggesting a way to push ahead in math?

Just want to say, OP, that lots of kids from other schools in the country take Alg. 1 in 9th grade and they get into plenty of schools. DCUM and the DMV can really skew up --- my nephew in Michigan is taking Alg 1 in 9th grade, he just finished a book that my DS read in 8th grade -but both will be fine and go to college.

No one is saying he can't go to college. I specifically said in a pp that he could probably get into engineering and comsci colleges after going to college and showing he csn do the higher math (sometimes they will admit you into the university but not into the major until you have prerequisite classes). So, yes, he can still get sn engineering degree, but it will likely take longer or be at a school outside of VA.

If OP wants to know about getting into Va Tech or other VA public engineering programs, then she got the truth about what the competition is like. It ain't pretty! Op's son has to position himself to compete with the calibre of applicants at the schools he is most likely to attend.
