Author's book publication cancelled after a tweet reporting on a WMATA employee eating on the metro

Anonymous
Every time I ride Metro, I hear "If you see something, say something"

Also, I don't have an expectation of privacy while I'm riding public transportation, just like I don't have an expectation of privacy while I'm walking down the street. Someone may take a photo of me.

Eating on Metro is forbidden under DC code .. it's not just a rule, it's illegal.

If the Metro employee claims they don't have enough time to eat while on the job, their union has failed them.

Nutshell

It’s racist to not eat in the metro.

Apparently it's racist to exist in metro.

Stipulate all that. But: Why has her book contract been cancelled?

In exactly what way is social justice enhanced by preventing her novel from being published?

That's the kind of sick sh*t that happens in totalitarian societies. Twitter mobs go after you; your friends and colleagues instantly desert you and condemn you; you become a non-person.

This does not advance racial justice. It just adds another injustice on top of the first.

Publishers are allowed to decide who they want to associate with. The author's actions highlighted a part of her personality that they weren't aware of and perhaps made them not interested in having to promote her. A private publisher has every right to decide who they want to go into business with. Having her novel published was not some inalienable right.

Exactly.

Goebbels would be proud of you two.

Really? Isn’t this what capitalism is all about? Goebbels controlled the information people received. I don’t know how this situation correlates. If this publisher had let this writer go because she was a KKK member, would you have disagreed? It’s not illegal to be a member, so by your logic, the publisher would have been wrong.

Barry Hobson, the chief of staff for the Metro workers union — Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689 — said in a statement the Metro employee was taking her meal break while in transit from one assignment to another. The statement notes operators have "an average of 20 minutes to consume a meal and get to their next access point to ensure all buses and trains are on time, safe, and ready to serve the riding public.”

From the article posted by OP.

Then Metro should alter their rules so that all passengers who are in similar situations get to eat on Metro if they choose.

From the same article. I assume it includes passengers?

Though the union acknowledged it is against Metro rules to eat on a train or in a station, Hobson’s statement also referenced an email from Metro Transit Police Chief Ron Pavlik sent May 8, ordering officers to “cease and desist from issuing criminal citations in the District of Columbia for fare evasion; eating; drinking; spitting, and playing musical instruments without headphones until further advised.”

WMATA folks are paid by taxpayers.

We can all expose their sh!tty work habits.

So you’re the kind of person who pays for a service and belittles the employee? I mean technically you are paying their wage when you pay for the service.

I suspect they are the kind of person that expects the service they’ve paid for.

Did the woman not get from point A to point B? Since that was the service she paid for. She didn’t pay to take pictures of others then mock them.

Also some clarification here:

The worker had an open plate of food on her lap. Correct?

Well then that needs to be addressed in the CBA.
But as a union worker, I can smell the typical BS a mile away. It’s his job to cover for his people. It makes them all look bad when a member is called out.

Give me a break there are a lot of rules that are rules for the public but are different for employees.
Cops can run red lights on the way to A service call
And ambulance can run a red light on the way to device call
I’ve been in lots of doctors offices in which the public is not allowed to use their cell phones but the employees are allowed to use their phones
Been to plenty of public buildings where it says restrooms for employees only
There are plenty of circumstances, contexts, environments in which there are separate rules for those who work there and those who patronize there
if you don’t know the difference, if you don’t get it that’s on you

Exactly! How many of you are taking pics of cops running red lights, speeding, etc then sending the pics in to get them fired?

Is an open plate somehow more offensive?

Because we have demographics that can’t follow rules.

A black officer speeding or running a red light is rushing to help. Why would I take a pic of that?

The issue is this woman posting it on social media. If she was really concerned she could’ve sent a private email to the company. Why did she feel the need to post it publicly. She got what she deserved.

How do you know he is black? How do you know he is rushing for help?

Do you take a picture of the flight attendant standing up when the fasten seat belt light is on?
