One guy giving his money away doesn’t change anything. This is a systemic issue. |
People don’t need $19mil a year. They need a living wage that allows them to house and educate their families, and access to adequate healthcare. We had that at reasonable levels in the past. Wealth was distributed along a bell curve, with a robust middle class. We are moving towards wealth being distributed along a “dumbbell” shape, with money at the top, and a lot of people at the bottom, and the end of the middle class. This is bad for the people at the bottom, but it’s also bad for the people at the top, because such a society is unstable. It will not end well for any of us. |
As if that’s a realistic option for the overwhelming majority of people. And not everyone is wired or driven for that. Some people are actually not materialistic sociopaths. Crazy, right? Doesn’t mean they should live in squalor and desperation. In the 70s, my grandfather supported 5 kids and a wife on a teacher’s salary, that’s impossible now. Why? |
I wonder if you know how much money the CEOs of Sanofi, CL ,Dassaoult LV and other make... |
Ok let's see... If you are not going to make any money discovering drugs why would you invest in research and development? Most people think that drug discovery is very cheap and simple... |
Oh please, insulin was discovered in 1921- no one needs patent protection on it as an incentive to discover new drugs, but the price tripled and more for no reason except that drug companies figured out they could charge more because people need it to live their lives and drug manufacturing and distribution is sufficiently complicated that it’s not easy for new cheaper sources to start up. Plus the Repoblicans jave forbidden the federal govt from negotiating the price of drugs. |
Two teachers making 160k a year can definitely live comfortably. Your argument is invalid because in the 70s dual income wasn't a thing. |
|
Epipens and insulin are old drugs and should be available cheaply as generics. They are often life saving. Humira and other biologics are newer drugs and hugely expensive--you can tell by how many dollars are spent advertising them on TV. No one is dying from lack of access to Humira as far as I know, although biologics can greatly improve quality of life for those with autoimmune diseases these drugs treat. Drug companies do need to recoup the R and D costs of the biologics, so I am willing to give something of a pass on the costs. And I am saying this as the parent of child for whom the next treatment step is a biologic. |
Where is it that teachers make 160K?!?! I love being a scientist but I'll walk out right now... |
I think the math was two teachers, each making $80,000. |
How many CEOS can there be in the world? How many people are there in the world? So you see, it is false that everyone can be the CEO. |
the difference between $19 mil and $10 mil or $24 mil in terms of lifestyle is ......? |
An upgraded model of trophy wife. |
LMFAO And there it is, the most stupid, yet common, rhetoric that privileged and out of touch people have. "No one is stopping you from being rich!" "Anyone can be like me if they try hard enough!" "It's all about hard work and self reliance!!!" This is the sort of bullshit that get posted on Instagram by clueless rich girls whose Lamborghinis were paid for by daddy, and whose husband's executive job at a hedge fund was handed to him without any merits. Get your head out of your ass. There's no such thing as "everyone can make it if they try hard enough". The only thing that's constant in this country is "everyone was born with certain privileges, and some were born with a f**** load more than others." |
