Why do some care about rules about gay people but ignore rule about shrimp, rape, and stoning women?

What political purpose? I do not think you are wrong, but can you give some examples?

See Pence, Mike.

PP here, but yes -- the immediate PP gave the answer I would have. These people are homophobic and are using the Bible to justify attacking gay people.

What is the attack? If you asked Mike Pence is stealing a sin, he'd say yes. If you asked him if gossip is a sin, he'd say yes. If you asked him is jealously is a sin, he'd say yes.

But Mike Pence thinks that gossips and jealous people deserve equal rights under the law. But he does not think gay people do.

He also thinks it is okay for his wife to work at a school that will not hire gay teachers but will hire people who gossip.

I bet you $1000 that a known gossip, or someone caught gossiping or causing drama on a continual basis, would not remain employed there. I would also bet you that someone having an affair, with no intention of stopping, would not remain employed. I bet they don't employ people "shacking up" either. It's all part of morality. To be employed there, you must live by a set of morals dictated by the Christian faith. That's not saying every single employee has not sinned - because they have and will continue to do so. But purposely engaging in ongoing sin without repentance isn't setting a good example for their student body.

^^ I also bet I wouldn't be employed there, as I often engage in gambling.

I bet you $1000 that they employ obese people, like Pence's wife, which clearly shows she is a glutton. What about greed... what is her net worth?

Shellfish, stoning, and shrimp laws are OT laws.

Homosexuality is NT law.

Jesus also said “he who is without sin cast the first stone” to people who wanted to stone an adulteress.

We follow the Law of Christ. That’s why we don’t follow all laws in the Bible anymore. It’s not picking and choosing though, it’s based on which law we are bound to.

OK, I am not an expert. What are all the places in the new testament that talk about homosexuality?

This is false, Jesus never said homosexuality was a sin.

Romans 1:6-8, 1 Timothy 1:8-11, and 1 Corinthians 6:9-11

NT Law isn’t limited to only what Christ said. Because the Bible is inspired, the writings of the disciples and other teachers are fully God’s Word and approved by Him.

I prefer Jesus's commandments to Roman, Timothy and Corinthians. There are in direct opposition to each other. You have to pick one... I pick Jesus.

Also, I don't see divorced people being discriminated against. So why all the hate for gay people.

+1. Romans, Corinthians and Timothy are writings by and about people who followed Jesus. I, too, choose to go with the gospels, which record what Jesus said. The gospels don’t mention homosexuality.

Essentially, you are picking and choosing from the Bible. That’s fine, but I don’t buy this whole “Paul’s letters are pastoral,” stuff. Paul was chosen by Jesus. Paul’s writings are the foundation of the Church.

Op here. +2

I also think that the future of Christianity depends on figuring this out

You can't sustain a religion for generation after generation with outdated views that many people view as hateful and discriminatory

As it is, I'm somewhat nervous mentioning that I go to church because I do not want people to assume I'm a trump voter, homophobe, or any of the other things associated with religion lately. I'm in a mainline Protestant denomination, not Evangelical though

+1, I think

At some point in history, good religious people interpreted something in the Bible that allowed slavery, that forbid blacks and whites from marrying, that permitted segregation...is that right? And then at some point, (when it became obvious this was unacceptable and discriminatory), someone said the Bible didn't mean it that way. At least this is what I've always assumed, so please correct me if I'm wrong. But, if this is the case, what if we're just on the wrong side of the homosexuality is a sin interpretation? What if mental health and families are destroyed because it's being misinterpreted?

Where does that verse mention baptism?

Really?

You need to be baptized to fully accept Jesus, no? That's a big part of it, right?

So if you have to go through Jesus to get to God, it would stand to reason that you need to accept Jesus. Accepting Jesus requires baptism, right?

Where does the Bible say you need to be baptized to fully accept Jesus? In fact, where is the explanation of this verse? Anything could be "through Jesus."

Ok, sure.

But those who don't engage with Jesus at all--aka Jews, non-Christians--don't go to heaven, right?

In Christianity, Heaven is full communion with Jesus Christ for all eternity... why would a non-believer want that? It wouldn’t make sense for someone with no relationship with Jesus to even want that.

... because the alternative, according to Christians, is hell? Hell is not supposed to be a pleasant place.

And what does the Bible tell us about Hell? Very very little. Perhaps it is simply the absence of God, or the end of your existence altogether.

Jews get to spend eternity with G-D but not through Jesus. G-d is amazing like that he created many paths to salvation.

Um nope Jesus is the only way to God. John 14:6

14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God[a]; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Jesus the Way to the Father
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know[b] my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

It's the only way for Christians.

But G-D could not reveal himself the same way to all, so he created many paths.

Exactly. Christians, you need to just accept that your religion dictates one path to salvation -- through Jesus. If you're not comfortable with that, consider that you might not be comfortable with being a Christian.

The best the Catholic Church has told Jews is that we get to be in purgatory, which still places us farther from God than you all. Not the greatest situation for us.
