my kid wanted someone else editing or reading her essays. I got my work smithing best college friend to do it. she charged 2 cents a word. I just skimmed them over for fun. |
totally! love it. |
Me not right so goodly, so I ain't gonna mess it up. Compared to my near genius son, I'm an idiot (and I'm happy about it). |
Define "edit." My son isn't the greatest when it comes to grammar and punctuation. I absolutely plan to edit for those. Editing for substance? While I might suggest that a particular subject should be included or left out, that's going to be up to him. |
| I dropped my child off for freshman year this week. The University President said..Even if you helped your child with their essay..you did not trick us into accepting a student that was not qualified. We know who will be successful here... I thought of this thread immediately. |
Can you reveal which college this is so that I can sure no one in my family attends there? I’m not saying he is not correct, it is just a very lousy petulant thing to say. |
+1 It's a really dumb thing to say. The University President isn't omniscient. |
+1 We never looked at DC's essays. If DC wasn't capable of writing a great essay on his own, then he probably wouldn't belong at an elite college. In fact, the only part of the whole college process we were involved in were the visits. And we spent our time looking at the safeties, not the reaches. |

"My daughter went to schools Pre-K to 12 that encouraged parents not to review homework, not even for editing. The philosophy was teachers could help them better if they knew the work was solely the work of the student. I was thankful for that philosophy. Following in that same mode, DD submitted both college essays without letting me see them even though I offered to review. I was very nervous; however, she is a good and confident writer. Admitted to Harvard and Yale this year."
That is a great model for school but it has nothing to do with applying to college. Do you think Harvard or Yale's placement office isn't going to edit her resume before they let her send it to their hand-picked greased-skid internships? |

"Do you think Harvard or Yale's placement office isn't going to edit her resume before they let her send it to their hand-picked greased-skid internships?"
I can hear JP Morgan's VP of HR calling President Bacow now, "What's going on down there? Half of the resumes you sent me have spelling or grammar errors." |
I think most people think light editing (second pair of eyes) is fine. But people on this thread have said they've hired professionals to entirely write Junior's essays. One woman said her older child wrote the essays for a younger child who "didn't feel like doing it." #privilege |
Not surprisingly, PP refuses to say where it is. |
+2 I'm sure the FP made it up. Judging from the writing style and grammatical/punctuation errors it is doubtful if the FP is even out of elementary school. |
| I gave both DC's essays a quick once over to spot any obvious typos or grammatical errors.....there's nothing wrong with that in my book. And frankly, as a parent you'd be a fool not to do that for your DC. |
Why would I possibly share any further info with you?! |
