Looks like FCPS won’t have a 5 day week of school until February....f-ing ridiculous.

A message from FAIRFAX COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Fairfax County Public Schools is monitoring the weather for any impacts to school operations tomorrow, Monday, January 8.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for early tomorrow afternoon that forecasts a wintry mix for Fairfax County, with either freezing rain or rain that will freeze on contact with very cold ground surfaces.
An update will be provided by 5:15 a.m.

Um, FCPS, Freezing rain is rain that freezes in contact. No “or”.

Thanks to irresponsible parents.

I'm sure you're so self-righteous in your smug. Have you ever tried to get around in this area when it starts to ice? The government lets out early and nothing moves. It can take more than an hour to get a few miles. Metro sucks even worse than usual.. Responsible parents with care plans may still not be able to get to the school within an hour to get kids. Kids get stuck on buses sliding off the roads. But you keep feeling superior because your either rich or unemployed.

Unfortunately, I have a bad feeling, it will be closed Monday and Tuesday. I took last Thursday off, DH took Friday off. No idea what I'm going to do for Monday and Tuesday

Wait are we worried about Tuesday now?

Is there a possibility/precedent that they would announce early dismissal at 5:15am tomorrow? Basically like a regular early dismissal day prior to a holiday? That would get the kids to school for a bit and give parents enough time to adjust schedules or plan for child care.

Yes. Absolutely. There will be more info overnight about how certain the freezing temperatures will be in the afternoon so that a decision can be made either way (reg dismissal time if temps are warmer or early closure if they will be freezing)

Fcps and lcps are totally colluding/using each other for cover. They make the same decisions and send the same info at almost the same time. It’s like thy want to be able to say - don’t blame us! They closed too!!”

I’ll be the broken record - this is all about the Labor Day waiver in both counties. They need on average 8/year. If we get a big snowstorm with several days off, weather like we are having tomorrow or super low temps will not even catch their attention. The deciders behave totally differently late winter once they know how many days they are working with. I guarantee the kids will go to school in late Feb/early March with as cold temps as we saw Friday. Happens almost every year.

?? Here’s NOAA’s current forecast for Tuesday:

Mostly sunny, with a high near 42. Light west wind becoming northwest 5 to 9 mph in the morning.

If there's freezing rain/ice overnight Monday, when it'll be too cold to melt without treatment, then we're for sure at least a 2 hour delay on Tuesday. The high is supossed to be mid 40s so I doubt they close all day.

That’s really helpful, thank you. Do you think it’s safe to say that there will not be a full day closure tomorrow?

I'm not sure you realize that Fairfax and Loudoun are next door to each other and often have similar weather forecasts.

Have you forgotten the decision a couple years ago to open on time with ice on the ground, with cars and school buses sliding all over the roads? I'd rather not repeat that.

My money is on an on-time arrival with a 2-Hour early release announced at 5:15am if not sooner.
