I have zero sympathy. Taking drugs is a conscious choice just as drinking us.

Seriously? Are you really that thick headed to not understand that addiction is a DISEASE? Just like cancer, Alzheimer's,asthma, arthritis...you have zero sympathy for those who suffer from those illnesses as well? Part of the problem in this conversation is the extreme ignorance, it is frightening. GO EDUCATE YOURSELF.

I am not PP, but if you never take an opiate I guarantee you won't become addicted. It was a choice at some point.

Wow you are really part of the problem. Sad. And let me guess you have never know anyone who is an addict or suffers from addiction of any kind, right? Ok, uh huh. Good luck to you.

Actually, two in my immediate family. Thanks though. Yes, once you are addicted, it's a disease. Self medicating with drugs is not a disease.

NP. I have a family member who fit the picture of a young man from a well-to-do, "perfect" family who recently died of this. He struggled with addiction, in and out of rehab for years before overdosing about 2 years ago at the age of 26.

Yes, it BECAME a disease but it did not START as a disease. I think it's people like YOU who are part of the problem, as you refuse to recognize that, at some point, virtually all of these people made a decision to take or keep taking these drugs.

Are you being deliberately obtuse? For many years, people were told explicitly by their doctors that the drugs they were getting were NOT addictive. Insurance companies would not pay for holistic pain management that included OT, PT and counseling (even though those things have a good success rate), but they would gladly pay for hundreds of pain pills. People made choices on the recommendation of their doctors and their insurance companies. And opiods are exceedingly difficult to quit once you have gotten hooked, not because people are determined to stay hooked, but because of the chemistry of the molecule.

i really recommend the Dreamland book for anyone who is interested in learning more about the perfect storm that bred the epidemic.

How about the thing you're self-medicating (or not self-medicating; these are prescription drugs, after all) -- is that a disease, or is it a choice too?

Often, a choice, or something that develops due to dumb decisions.

Yes, well, now we know, don't we? And yet people continue to take these things, thinking they will be an exception to the rule.

Something else I dispute in your thinking: At least in the case of my relative (noted above), the foray into drugs definitely started with underage drinking. And then pot. And then.... well, you know the story.

Well, then all teenagers who experiment with underage drinking don't deserve your sympathy for anything bad that happens to them. Must be nice up there on your high horse.

Yes, if you only look hard enough, everything bad that happens to anybody turns out to be their own fault.

Sorry, I adagree with you. Self medicating is a dysfunctional way of dealing with things. For example, trauma or abuse. Those aren't diseases. Plenty of people with these as well as DISEASES don't do drugs. They go and get the help they need.

Disagree ^

A lifetime of trauma and abuse might as well be a disease insomuch as it keeps a person from having a normal life and making good decisions. As the old saying goes, you can't pull yourself up by the bootstraps if you don't have any boots.

It's not "experimenting" with underage drinking. Very often, it's underage regular drinking, binging and drinking often, with parents who look the other way or even condone it by serving it to them.

They're not mutually exclusive, you know. I don't think that very many people decide to become addicts when they decide to take a pain pill, any more than you decide to get in a car crash when you decide to get in a car. I

This PP. On this point, I totally agree with you.
