Only if you look at K in isolation. If you combine PK and K, the % of students entering is approximately equal to the % earning NMSF, at least in this one snapshot.


Approximately 27% of the current senior class started in PK or K (so-called lifers). 37.5% of the SFS NMSFs are lifers. The numbers for those entering in 9th grade are quite similar.

The students that meet the high standards of the National Merit program and are named semi-finalists should be able to publicly celebrate their achievement. Both of my sons were finalists and one was a National Merit Scholar. We were happy that this was made public as we were very proud of them and they also were proud of what they had accomplished. I think it's unfortunate that the students in DC who achieved this will not have that happy moment because the Obama daughter did not qualify, which, of course, is what's going on.
