What Chicago suburbs are nice?

It seems so boring and white bread.

I have heard not so great things about the north shore area, particularly those feeding into New Trier- the whole conspicuous consumption, rich kid affluenza thing. And a total pressure cooker environment. True or not?

We like neighborhoods with sidewalks, trees, prefer older homes although new homes are fine but very much against tract homes, cul-de-sac-y type subdivisions.

No more of a pressure cooker environment than in Arlington. It's just that unlike Virginia, the state schools in IL suck.

I'm not from Chicago but visit the area often with DH. He likes River Forest. The neighborhoods feed into Oak Park River Forest High School and there is an El station.

I don't get the Cabrini-Green reference.
