Mad Men - the final count down

The last episode, to me, seemed to be adults wanting to be kids and kids wanting to be adults: Lots of childhood imagery: Tinkerbell/Peter Pan, World's Fair, the Play Park, Don drinking root beer, eating donuts, getting candy out of the vending machine. Then there was Joan wanting to "run away" without responsibilities like her new boyfriend; Betty going back to college; Glen going into the Army, the girls going off on their mult-state trip.

The teenage girls all knew what they wanted to be when they grew up (translator, senator) but the adults still have no idea.

However, I have no idea how all of this ties into how this shit ends.

This is a really good observation. There was also a lot about "appearances". Don was told he had no character, was just "good looking" and he in turn told Sally she was " a very beautiful girl" as if that meant anything, when really it doesn't, least of all to her.

I do think Don may quit the business. He kept asking everyone what they saw in the future ( ideas for his speech) and seemed disappointed/surprised when all their dreams were about work.

I'm surprised Joan's ex-husband has never come back.

I think the ending will involve some sort of end to the idea of Don Draper--maybe the feds will come for Dick Whitman, or he'll walk away and have to decide whether to leave his kids.

Best analyses I've seen are in the Tom and Lorenzo Mad Style threads and the Vulture recaps.

If anyone remembers the finale to The Sopranos, they will know that MWeiner is happy to leave things not tied up neatly with a bow. And I'm happy with a open-ended finale too for this series actually. It means anything is possible.

Sopranos was David Chase.

Weiner had stopped writing for the Sopranos by the time of the finale, IIRC.

Sally ended up being the best character in the entire series.

I agree. I love watching Sally, especially her take-downs of her parents.

i like sally but the way she talks to her parents. no ma'am!

Why doesn't Joan enlist Roger's help with her son. It is his baby, right?

Funny how the show just kind of glazed over that and then dropped it.

Many reasons why Joan does not want to involve Roger. Right now everyone thinks her son is her ex-husband's child - opposed to being illegitimate/product of an affair (these things were impt back then). Also it could affect her position at work - she has worked hard to over ome her image of success due to her looks/sleeping with the boss. Last, in 1970 all the father would have had to do is peovide money support, and Joan has plenty of money - it would have been unheard of for a father to have partial custody. So no net positive for Joan to involving Roger.

he tried. more than once. she deemed it would be confusing. probably knowing there's no way they'd really ever end up together being a family cause he'll never really settle down or know how to love.

She also pointed out that she didn't want him to forge a relationship only to turn tail and disappear when his next woman / wife appeared on the scene.

Joan said she was divorced twice? All I remember is the abusive ex husband who left for the military. Who's the other divorce?

I was wondering the same thing. I've watched every episode of Mad Men, most more than once, and don't remember her being married or talking about being married to anyone other than Greg. They would never make a continuity error like that on this show.

Me too. I can only think it was before her time at Sterling Cooper - there was always the fact that she was older than she said - in the first series she turned 30 and people (Peggy) were shocked and she was embarrassed. She had all her 20s to be married and then divorced.

She had a quickie 6 month marriage to a guy named Scotty when she was young.
