so you're saying that Ivy League/New England women are sophisticated because you think French women are sophisticated? Barf, barf, barf. So damn conceited.

I saw a program on Oprah once about how French women stay skinny. This French woman was showing the audience how the French do lunch... glass of wine, a small piece of cheese and some lettuce. Are you f'n kidding me? I'd starve to death on that diet and I'm very petite, and good luck working long hours with just that for lunch. And do you think Parisian women work out? No, they don't believe in being athletic, only fashionable.

Stop comparing yourselves to women from other countries. It's a different culture folks. If you like it so much, please move there so we don't have to see your pretentiousness here.

that's where you fail.

you (and all of us) should be pushing for french working hours and work/life balance.

I don't work long hours. Never have. I work PT. Even when I did work FT, I left the house at the earliest 8:30 and back home no later than 4:30, and did a bit of work at home.

I am addressing the seemingly plethora of women here that do work long hours. I wasn't trying to address all the bad vs good of the french culture here; the work/life balance should be on a different post. But if you want to address all the great things about the French, you can include the great maternal/paternal benefits they have there, too; the free healthcare; the 1 month vacation time. But they also don't value meritocracy. It's all about seniority and nepotism. A lot of young people leave France for this reason, and go to other countries that do value meritocracy - like the UK. You can google it; there are plenty of articles about it.

It would be great if the US did value family leave more. For a supposed country that is all about family values, the laws surely do not reflect this. But again, this is for another thread. See how much I digressed from the topic.

This country isn't 'all about family values', this country is all about money. Pure unadulterated capitalism, and the laws do reflect that. Family leave, yeah, right.

But I agree, this conversation is for another thread.

You know, re: family values - I wish we could think of this as human values, or how we all like to spend our time, rather than just families.

I don't have kids. But I still really, really value my free time. I like to do all sorts of productive and nonproductive things instead of working all the time.

I know family leave is a politically appealing way to think about the need for folks to have time away from the office. But, speaking for those of us who don't have kids and still don't want to work 24/7, I'd prefer to think of this as just a human issue instead of a kid-focused one.

Also, it's really nice out today. Make sure to get some sun!

French women are thin because they smoke cigarettes. If you want to "look French," smoke. Also wear anything with navy and white stripes.
