I mean, you can not be a fan of The Wire all you want, but it has consistently been noted as one of the best TV shows of all time. This was not that. Fine show, entertaining enough, quite moving in parts, but it's not particularly high quality. |
I wish Tierney had adapted the book more. He pretty much had them just speak the dialogue verbatim. Takes a way from the overall acting at times when the writing is so weak in places. |
| I’m watching for the accents. I know everyone is raving about the Russian accent, but how about those Canadians? Love to hear it. |

The club scene with TATU’s hit song playing in the background, esp when Ilya is scanning the club for his man (“this is not enough” on repeat as they are both hooking up with women); the phone call confession in Russian; and the All Star weekend in Tampa are some of the best scenes I’ve watched on TV in recent years. It’s no surprise that these particular episodes are rated near a 10 on IMDb by tens of thousands of reviewers.

| The Soundtrack is great. Really added to the scenes. |
+1. There is no way Bradley Cooper, Leo, Hugh Jackman, Clooney, Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp etc. are all straight. We all know that. The show didn’t need to tell us being gay is looked down upon in hockey; it assumes the audience is smart enough to already know that. |
It’s not simply gay male athletes in sports, but the fact that Ilya & Shane are supposed to be huge rivals, the best players in the top two teams in the league. Imagine if news came out that Messi & Ronaldo were lovers a decade ago?! It’s a taboo and will sadly be so for many years to come. B listers, especially teammates - that’s easier. |
I think they see a beautiful picture and get excited |
I hate it when people think like you (no offense to you personally) and smart people at that. It means you understand nothing about great drama if you find it merely “depressing”. Even more sad is the fact that you don’t understand how this show is mediocre in terms of dramatic effect. It’s a high quality music video with erotic elements and that’s it. -DP |
I also think dialogue on a book and dialogue on the screen can hit differently, so I wish they had taken that into account. Sometimes it did feel like they were "reading lines" for lack of a better term. Again though, the actors did a great job with a sub-par script. |

I do understand that The Wire is a much higher quality dramatic TV show. Still, I don’t enjoy watching The Wire. After a stressful day, I like to watch something entertaining at night. It’a great that we all like different things. |
It's almost like you can't follow a thread with your PhD. The point of bringing up The Wire was to say that this show's ratings on Rotten Tomatoes are not indicative of its quality, but of something else. I don't think anyone said it wasn't an entertaining show, the point is that it's not as deep or as much of a social commentary or as high-quality as some people are saying. That doesn't make it enjoyable to watch. Does that make sense to you? |
