How old is your kid and what are they getting for Xmas this year?

He’s 16. He wants a hoodie and cast iron pan. I got both which was around $65 and I bought him a cookbook. So around $85.

I don't think the generic Target version of American Girl items are an extravagant request.

Seems very reasonable to me.

And might this short list be because he has just about everything he could want? Sincerely asking. My 19-year-old DS also has a short list...but he already has a lot.

This is a toy for an elementary schooler. They don't really know how much stuff costs. I also give my kids a lot of used toys and cheap toys and homemade stuff but I think for a stranger's child it's appropriate to buy something new. The thing my kids consistently want and get that is expensive is Lego.

I always look at tags before I take them to make sure it's something I can do. Sometimes they are asking for a kind of toy I'm not familiar with and I don't know how to pick it, like I vaguely know what beyblades are, but I wouldn't know which item to buy if the tag just said "beyblades" vs SuperAwesome LaserType Deluxe Beyblade Arena [yes I made that up]. If it was a specific thing I'd Google it quickly to make sure it was in my price range. If I don't think it's age appropriate or it's something I have an issue with, I'll leave that tag.

I think it's fine to choose a different tag for whatever reason but it's not cool to dunk on a little girl for wanting relatively expensive toys. They're kids. They don't know. They just want what other kids have. No one is forcing you to participate, so I think you should take a tag you are happy about fulfilling as requested.

Actually, you’re the racist with your own baseless assumptions about angel tree recipients. Take a seat.

I have seen many of them, every year. The last week, the tree is full of requests for iPads, iPhones and PS5s. Ridiculous.

And don’t start with the bleeding heart “they’re just kiiiids, they’re asking Saaaanta,” etc. They have parents who need to approve them being in the program and who do know better.

But these are the things kids have these days. Of course poor kids want the same things their peers have.

Already covered. Refer to the comment to which you responded. Read slower, for comprehension this time. Hint: Pay special attention to the final sentence.

I never assumed or said anything about the recipients.

You assumed I was also making an assumption about the recipients when calling out racist language. That’s called racist implicit bias.

How embarrassing for you…

It's a normal list because he doesn't want much. I raised him this way.

This was the item, and I guess we can just disagree. I think a single toy for $200 is very expensive:

That’s an awesome gift, though. My sisters and I would have gotten a lot of play out of that.

I doubt this is the case with 99% of these toys, but being pedantic here, some do appreciate over time - and quite a bit. I’ve got an original American Girl “Molly” which is pretty rare - the original ones were made by the Pleasant Company before the Mattel acquisition and are worth $2K+ today. More if they have the original furniture and accessories.

So all that to say yes toys are usually a sunk cost but some of the doll stuff or collector adjacent stuff especially can come back around.

No, I’m not spending more on something I would not buy for my kid.

I would easily spend more for a child in need than my own kid. Mine want nothing for Christmas because they have everything they want. They aren’t the type who need the latest trendiest crap. I’d rather spend the money on a $200 dollhouse along with some dolls on a child that otherwise doesn’t have a chance of getting it.

You would but you didn't. All talk, no action. Typical.
