Leaving tween/teen home over summer

A teenager - yes. And hopefully would have a job. Tween? No.

Both are fine, they should both be more than capable of not burning the house down and entertaining themselves.

But OP, if you are talking about one kid without a way to go anywhere, this sounds awful. Who (of any age) wants to be trapped home alone for 10+ hours a day for weeks? If they can see friends, ride a bike somewhere safe, or have a teen sibling, okay. But alone sounds awful.

A phone, not a smart phone, but a dumb phone would be good in this situation.

A dumb phone is good enough.

Maybe a good old fashioned land line would work.

You're right, not debating that at all. But, ppl seem to be scoffing at that idea, so I suggested a dumb phone.

Yes, those were the good old days. Now tweens/teens that are home alone over the summers spend 7+ hours per day staring at their phones. They do not spend it roaming the neighborhood, watching TV, and picking up new hobbies. Some parents are fine with the hours upon hours of staring at phones. But, as a high school teacher, I think it is not good for our teens, to say the least.

It's such a shame that kids no longer have the motivation to get off screens on their own.
