Do walk-ons still exist in college sports?

Jordan Faison was recruited to Notre Dame to play lacrosse. In his first year at ND he walked on for football, did amazing as wide receiver, and consequently the school moved his scholarship over to football. He still plays lacrosse and is an amazing contributor in that sport as well. Just an outstanding athlete.

Here he is #14 recently on the lacrosse field.

Women’s or men’s? That’s a big diff since men’s is considered a club team.

I'm guessing it's the women's team. I believe they have tryouts every year, as crew is a sport that a tall, athletic kid can learn relatively late in the game. I don't think you'd call a kid who joined a club sport a "walk-on."

I imagine crew is also an outlier because the pool of high school kids who row is so limited relative to other high school sports.
