PG is changing start and dismissal times with less than 6 months notice

These start times suck. I was one of the posters that said we would adapt but my goodness. School starts for my elementary kids at 7:30am. They will have to wake up really early. In addition, aftercare is an absolute must. They get out at 1:40! They will be in aftercare for over 4 hours. This is insane.

Did you have a change from 7:45 or was it a change from a later start time.
Thankfully my kids schools didn't change at all but I know other are going to have a difficult adjustment.

Yep and Bowie HS changed from 815 to 730 poor kids. at least they dont need aftercare like ES/MS

I just dont think 730 should be a start time for any school. Its not enough sleep if a bus rider, which is the WHOLE reason the times got changed. Irony.

And aftercare will increase because its longer hours. And kids will be essentially indoors from 730-4/5pm if in aftercare. They'll transition fine to factory line work.

We live 8 mins from Bowie HS and my neighbor's kid gets on the bus to BHS at 6:24am every morning. It's horrendous.

I'm not in favor of elementary schools starting at 7:30am, just because we're talking about children ranging from 4-11 years old (if they're implementing all day Pre-K). I do think that's a bit early to wake up children at 6:30am, an hour before hand (possibly earlier if they're taking the bus) to go to school. I think 8:30a/9:30a is perfectly suitable. However, I don't think a 7:30am start time is a preposterous ask for a high schooler (children ranging from 13-18 years old). When I was in high school our first period bell rang at 7:25am, and this was in Montgomery County.

There is a large body of evidence that directly contradicts your thinking but regardless if you look at the bell times, the majority of high schools are moving from a 7:45 to a 7:30 start.

The upside of being in the first tier is that if they have enough drivers (which is one of the reasons they are shifting times) the buses should be on time. Later start schools often have longer bus delays because of a domino effect.

Bowie High School has some bus routes that are doubled up, so a driver will do an early route that starts at 6:30, drop those kids off early and then head out again to do a second route that would arrive before the first bell. Hopefully they will be able to eliminate those situations with the changes in routes and bell times.
