Economics of club volleyball

Look at what facilities are being used by Maryland clubs versus those in Virginia. More public schools on one side of the river vs. private schools, churches, club-owned/maintained facilities. Sure, it's not that clear cut, but it can explain some instances.

Is there a law in VA that you can't use public schools for volleyball because the clubs fees might drop to decent levels?

Apparently clubs can have reasonable club fees in Virginia, it's just that they prefer to rip off their families.

what may be deceptive about Go Volley's club fees is that his overhead is a lot less . . . he is located further out than most of the other clubs in the DMV, so facility rent is much cheaper . . . nice set up though. He did a great job of setting up the inside of his facility and he is a very technically proficient coach. If he was closer in, he would definitely be attracting a lot more players to his club.

I still haven't seen any math that would justify most of the club prices in VA. Let's say GoVolley is further out in Winchester, but how about MD clubs? How can they survive with reasonable fees if the facilities are so expensive? Are the facilities in MD so much cheaper than in VA?

I have heard from people much smarter than I would ever claim to be about VA commercial real estate availability and prices vs comparable space in southern MD, that the overhead in "true NOVA" (i.e., closer into DMV than Go Volley would be out in Winchester) is much higher than in those areas of Southern MD where there is commercial warehouse space of the type you would need to house a volleyball court. Like absurdly, so. In talking with people in the local VB community over these last few years that I've been immersed in it, there are people who have come here from other places with the idea to start a club or program, who ended up realizing that their best shot at it financially would be in Southern MD.

Even trying to pull off using the local public schools is supposedly more challenging in much of Northern Virginia versus Maryland. Things definitely get more affordable the further away from the DMV you get . . . but so does driving distance.

Not saying that clubs aren't making money . . they are. But I would imagine there were less stressful ways to rip parents and kids off than starting a volleyball club in the DMV.

A better comparison for Go Volley would be Blue Ridge who is also in the Winchester area.

It's also possible that the market in Winchester won't support the same fees as Fairfax or Loudoun counties. The median household income in Frederick County, VA is $92,443 versus $170,463 for Loudoun and $145,465 for Fairfax County. As long as people are willing to pay, the clubs don't have an incentive to lower fees.

Here is another club similar to Volley Viet (volunteer coaches, low fees - $995):

They only plan to have one age group (14s) though.
