How much did a ski trip cost your family?

I'm seeing flights from all local airports to Salt Lake in the $800+ range and that's if you fly back on a redeye, which doesn't work with small kids (3 kids under 12).

So we're looking at likely $5000 just to get there. Then $1500 to rent a suburban for a week.

A rental within walking distance to a lift is going to be close to $10k at least.

We already have passes and skis, and food will be similar to food at home, so i'll exclude that, but not sure how we do this for less than $16k.

Any tips on airfare? That is the toughest thing to stomach.

Yeah, my tip is to get a Time Machine and book your trip 9 months ago. It’s two months away!

It is really not the end of the world to take a shuttle to the mountain or (gasp) to park and walk. Also you miss out on some great mountains if you require ski in/ski out lodging, since it is not an option everywhere. My son and I had a great time at Snowbasin last year. We paid about $100/night for a hotel with free breakfast in Ogden. We rented a car and drove to the mountain but could have saved more money but taking the public ski shuttles.

Agree. But with kids it’s just soooooo much easier. Wear ski boots and poof, you’re already skiing. No need to take shuttle with skis, or park, etc. Pre kids, we used to stay in lodging that needs driving to mountain. With kids, after a few time shuttling skis & kids, and boots, we just splurge on ski in / ski out. Once kids are older and can carry their own skis, we’d go back to the cheaper and farther accommodations.

This is mostly lodging (5 nights ski in / ski out) 4K.
Epic pass about 1500 (still have 1 day left to ski)
Lessons for kids 1K
500 gas etc

Wow. Did you try to stay at the most expensive place you could find? And how do you spend $500 on gas?

I was just looking at the all inclusive Club Med prices for Canada and looks pretty good, based on what you are all spending. Club Med includes all food, lift tickets, ski school if you want it, rentals, etc as well as accommodation, flights and transfers. Just got a quote from the DC area for 4 people for 4 days of around $6000 all in.

500 is the gas, tolls, snacks on the mountain, tubing, arcade, …. It adds up.

A lot in Colorado but we had 9 people. Lodging with $24k for a week (ski in/out condo). Lift tickets were about $500 for adults for 6 days and $350 for kids buying using the epic pass. $3500 on ski school for four kids (it was $300-500 per day. Car rentals $2k. I would guess $1000k per day on food (mix of restaurants and eating in condo). Ski rentals about $1500 as some had their own.

We just got back from Steamboat and here is what we spent for a family of 3. 2 adults 1 6 yo. for a week.

Airfare 2200
Ski Camp 3 days 1250 ( they jacked up the prices from last year over Xmas)
Lodging ski in/out 3600
Ikon passes 2300 ( going to Utah in April)
Car- SUV through Turo 650
Food groceries and eating out 1000 for the week

We are avid skiers and we’ve seen the prices really skyrocket in the past few years. I was really pissed that I was paying 200+ more per day for ski school for my son than last year. We looked and once the holidays were over the prices went back down.

Are you absolutely set on Salt Lake?

We are on Epic so could go to Vail/Beavercreek/Keystone/etc. I looked and Denver or even Eagle is slightly less for plane tickets but still seems to be almost $800/ticket unless we fly Frontier, and i'm not sure that would end up less in the long run with luggage fees. Lodging is more in Vail/Beavercreek at first glance so I think it evens out with Park City.

I've skied Keystone and don't love it, and i know it could be a little less expensive. I've also skied Breck and do like it but am not sure I want to sleep at 10,000 feet.

So the prices I quoted above could come down if we cram everyone into a 2 bedroom, go to Keystone, but would still be $12k I think.

I've been looking at Salt Lake flights for months and i think they've been this high for a while.

How many people are in your party? We are a family of three and usually get a 1 bedroom condo on vacation. Occasionally we get a 2 bedroom but most of the time its the pull out sofa for DD. We are out most of the days skiing so we don't need a ton of space.

we did your Venice/Cortina trip last year and need to consider Utah/Colorado. The lift price difference is still shocking to me. And the food is awesome everywhere in Italy. alas. Anyway, regarding CO, How/where did you fly for $180?!

I was cruising the internet one night and thought to check flight prices to Denver since I knew the teenager had a couple of long weekends from school that did not align with major holidays ... and found IAD to DEN on United at $180 per person and bought them immediately. Just pure dumb luck. I was looking in early December for late January, so in advance but not uber-early.

This year, I am going without the teenager for mid-week skiing and have a r/t for $260.

Are you on epic? Go to CO/Breck. You can get a ski in/out townhouse for a lot less than 10K. Even cheaper if you book directly through rental agency.

Flights are what they are at this point. But you can at least get free checked bags if you fly SW.

I have been watching this thread and staying quiet, but for the salt lake spring break - try into Vegas and out of salt lake or vv. Try mid week, add a day, remove a day. We go to Utah every year and actually now stay in southern Utah - it is so so cheap and the skiing is still great for my family. Kids 12 and under ski free, rentals are like $30/day, and if the weather is crappy there are national parks. We absolutely love it and pay peanuts compared to the other posters. My kids have amazing memories.

Also, rent a car using Costco…we save a lot that way too. You do need q 4x4 for all resorts - southern UT or Salt Lake.
