Did she have covid? Who knows!! I am actually hoping it was covid, so we don't have to worry about it for a while lol.

Yeah just get the other kids and adults sick in the building. You’re a real gem. Pre-times this was looked down on too. My first year teaching I had pneumonia 4 times bc idiots sent their kids sick.

Exactly. Testing is easy. Just test and keep sick kids home please

That is ridiculous. And bad public health policy. What science are they basing that policy on?

No good reason to require 5 days off and then 5 days masked.

That is exactly why people just simply won’t test. If you don’t test, you don’t get the Covid diagnosis and can just go on assuming it’s a cold.

Don’t be that person.

What person?

Fever free for 24 hours and the kid can go back to school. Why would we have a different rule for Covid versus the flu at this point?

I interpreted it as don’t be a person that unnecessarily keeps your kids out of school because of the irrational fears of a small number of people with health anxiety.

You mean because one parent has serious health issues. You clearly don’t get the difference between documented medical issues and mental health issues. A simple cold is no big deal to you. A simple cold lasts weeks for me and usually needs multiple rounds of antibiotics and steroids.

OK- so what did you do before covid? Because we’re all going to do that.

No, “we” all are not, and you sound like a middle school bully with this nonsense.

I’m sorry PP. We are in the same boat and it sucks. Learning who is and is not a douchebag has been unpleasant at best.

Your definition of douchebag is ‘someone who doesn’t do what you want them to do’.

No, sorry, it doesn’t work that way.

You are the bully expecting everyone to change their behavior to cater to your needs. GTFOH

Except they aren’t even her *needs.* They are her desires, driven just as much by her own anxiety as any legitimate health issue that she may have.

It sounds like you have anxiety around being with your kids. If you cannot handle taking care of your kids when they are sick, it speaks volumes about your parenting and your kids are going to be the ones with mental health issues as their needs aren't met at home. Sick kids aren't learning. Its free child care for you.

Sick kids aren’t learning when they’re not in school. Nor are kids who aren’t sick, but who are forced to stay home due to overly restrictive policies.

Kids with mild symptoms, which includes lingering symptoms from past infections, absolutely can and do learn in school. To suggest otherwise completely ignores cold/flu season and anyone with seasonal allergies.

At this point I don't care any more. If they're sick enough to stay home they will but if they just have the sniffles I'm sure as $hit sending them to school. Sorry, not sorry. My kids are in HS and their education is more important at this point.

So, their education is important, but not the other kids who your kids will make sick? You are something else.

Np. I can't do this year after year. I agree with pp that my child's education is too important to have these week long absences for Covid plus I don't have the paid leave to stay home with him (and I've felt this way for a couple years). Last year my son had the flu and was out for a week because he felt miserable. Add that to days here and there for colds, strep, norovirus, and he just can't miss that much school for mild Covid.

Our system just isn't set up appropriately to accommodate multiple long absences throughout the school year. It's not. If you are extremely concerned about illness you have the option to homeschool. If you send your kids to school, you are accepting the risk.

This is so callous, self-serving and careless. His mild covid could infect someone else severely. Test him and send him in with a mask if he has symptoms. It's not hard to be a decent human being.

This is an odd response given the message you’re replying to was about pre-covid times. The implication of your message is that you should test for covid to determine whether or not is Ok to send them to school. Apparently other respiratory infections that can lead to pneumonia don’t exist anymore?

Otherwise, why are you saying to test? It’s certainly not easy to test for other viruses.

Callous or not, it’s reality. And it isn’t unique to schools. Anyone with complicated health conditions will need to determine appropriate and practical ways to protect themselves. Just like they did before covid.

What kills me is when parents send their miserably sick kids to school instead of letting them stay home and get well, and they also don't send their kids masked. Those parents don't care about anyone. If you are going to send sick kids to school, please have them mask.
