Why are people so hesitant to call themselves rich/wealthy when they are by any definition?

2) Once you acknowledge it, it can be taken away and/or you feel even more responsibility to help others

Also, yes, we are rich both by income and NW but as many other people will agree, we know many others who are much wealthier so by comparison we don't feel rich

This to #1. I was raised MC trending towards LC (definitely LC according to DCUM.) We have about 25 million dollars. I know I’m rich, but I don’t identify with the rich people crowd and I have no desire to. I also was raised in a wealthy New England town where it is gauche to advertise your wealth. It also feels like a privacy thing. So we try to downplay our wealth. I have noticed my teen doing the same thing though we never explicitly told her to. It’s just what makes us comfortable.

This here " I don't identify with the rich people crowd", one of my friends was earning way less than me but used to save up for designer bags and shoes. I am sure I had a larger networth than her but I still didn't identify with her. On the other hand.. we have family friends who are definitely richer than us, but we are able to identify with them because they don't lead a "rich people life". Now, if they start calling themselves "rich" that would be off putting for us and would likely affect our friendship dynamics. I am more comfortable with calling ourselves well to do or financially secure vs calling ourselves rich
