I was curious about this, also - anyone know about the outdoor space? Thanks!

Yes, there will be outdoor playing space, including possibly on the roof, per the announcements made at the last parent meeting.

It seems very clear that the upper-class oriented charters will never expand east of the River.

This. And they will jump start gentrification in a new area and torpedo any momentum of any Ward 5 MS or HS.

Archbishop Carroll is directly across the street.

Why did you delete the comment and link about the ED saying he'd love to explore a feeder with YY?

+100 Latin is an absolute gem for those lucky enough to get in. If it makes you feel better to tear it down, go ahead, but it's been wonderful for our kids.

What I'm reading in these comments doesn't seem entitled or antagonistic. it tells me that Latin isn't doing as good a job as they hope in communicating about their mission to prospective families. I'm one of the PP who said the format of the open house was a total bust but that the approach of the school seems like a good one. Maybe they don't worry about it too much because of their long wait lists but some of this feedback could be helpful to them.

and, without a lot of visibility into the other properties considered for their second campus, it does feel bizarre to have the second site so close to the first when they endeavor to be accessible to the whole city.

It's this. Latin knows it will be number 1 on almost everyone's wait list anyway so they don't have to do much at these open houses.

They don't have to do all that much, period. No extra curriculars for 5th graders at Latin Cooper? No music, no performing arts, no real art at all, no real sports and none planned.

None of this statement is true. Many of the extra curriculars are during Magis. During the school day, there is a substantial Arts block at Cooper where there is band, there is drama, there is a graphic novels club, there are book clubs, and there are a multitude of classes in different arts. The kids are shuttled to the other campus for sports. The administration has active plans to further expand offerings at Cooper as the campus grows.

Are Latins sports open to all or are there tryouts?

Not that person, but I had attended the Zoom meeting, and pretty sure he didn't say that. (But I didn't watch the link to confirm.)

Many of the sports are by tryouts, but there is always one or two sports open to all (cross country in the fall and track in the spring, at the very least).

How could they build playing fields on the roof? It's not even flat.

I don't know if it was on the roof or elsewhere in the building. Cap Hill Montessori got one after their renovation. It's not impossible.

Honestly, this is Middle School. Tons of outdoor space is just not that important at this point.

Dont blame Latin because Brookland middle is a total failure. If DCPS wants high achieving students and upper middle class families then they need to be responsive to the needs of families who have very high expectations on learning. Theu will not get a critical mass until they offer more advanced classes, that are tracked. period.

Small school on 2nd street without good facilities, shut out from sports, and not many extracurricular offerings does not make it like a small private school. The scores for the school is also mediocre.

If this is one of the best middle/high school options EOTP then it’s sadly lacking. I’m shocked that parents are desperate enough to go there to stay in the city.

We plan on going to the DCI open house and will see how that goes. If not well, then will go private or move to the burbs.

Honestly, you should have left already PP.
