She’s the other one I referenced above. They think she washed out to sea. I saw one article that said a helicopter saw a body floating in the sea, but lost sight of it in the rough swell. It was thought to be her.

But my impression was that she and her parents were very close to the mouth of the volcano and nowhere near the water as the brother recounted his journey to go find help - how could she then be in the water? Perhaps my impression of what he recounted was incorrect or I misunderstood what he described.

I read that a storm came in shortly after the explosion, bringing substantial flooding.

That’s not exactly true. The doc explains this.

What happened to the helicopter pilot's 4 tourists? They never explained why they never found 2 bodies but believe they washed out to sea. I wish they had covered more of the timeline as the rescue part was unclear. Tourists were left to die. It was also outrageous that the helicopter pilots were told to go to the airport instead of the hospital. If you read more about this, they waited hours before sending help. The response was ridiculous. Also the helicopter pilots were/are being charged with crimes which is ridiculous.

I don't know. "Active" isn't very well-defined. If something is open for tourism, wouldn't you assume that it's safe? It didn't seem to be advertised as a risky excursion.

They didn't let anyone know that it was at level 2 until they were there on the island. They didn't explain what level 2 meant. Most damning was the clip where one of the survivors talks about the guide saying he wanted to cut the walk on the volcano short because he thought the volcano was dangerous at that time.

Apparently there are only 3 levels. so yeah, pretty serious but tourists probably thought it was out of 5 or 10 and again, assumed they wouldn't go there if it was really dangerous. I mean the guides didn't have any trepidation. That's an excursion I totally would have chosen.

Quoted above is not true. One of the guides wanted to shorten the time on the island because he thought it was unsafe.

I just watched it and it seems like that’s exactly what happened.

My takeaway was that the island was more than an hour away by boat, and the fumes from the volcano made the airspace dangerous. It was heroic of the men who flew there to power through and take the risk with their helicopter and plane, but it’s not like the authorities were completely indifferent to the tragedy that was unfolding. I’m open to a different perspective, but that’s the picture that was painted for me in the doc.

Go read more. They delayed sending any help by hours.

That recent link explains - two of the pilot’s passengers also jumped in the water with him and didn’t have significant injuries. Two hesitated to jump in and got burned.

Disagree, every living person was rescued.

I was so impressed with that young man who lost the rest of his family! Talk about PTSD.

We don't know that for certain.

Huh? They were rescued, but not by the rescue agencies. Other people bravely stepped in to do their job.

Exactly. And not only that, but many of those who were rescued ended up dying later. Who knows if being helped better/sooner could have saved any of them.

Am I the only one who caught the fact the closest rescue by helicopter was an hour away? The private company was 20 minutes away. The closest boats were 60-90 minutes away. This was an act of god and most people were killed instantly or dead before even the closest rescue could have gotten to them. The kid who survived had no way of knowing his family was still alive when he was rescued.

It is easy to Monday morning quarterback, but the idea professional medical personnel left them to die is patently absurd.

You are wrong. Read more about what happened. The officials admit now their delayed response - we are not talking about the 90 minute boat ride distance, was a huge failure. They refused to do anything for hours after they were informed there were people on the island after the eruption. The only rescuers were the people on the tour boats and the helicopter pilots. They admit they screwed up by not reacting. People were left to die.

The “professional medical personnel” didn’t even bother to show up.

The brave people who stepped in almost missed that kid. They were about to leave before they found him.

The people who stepped in and stayed on the island were tour guides - ie untrained young people who clearly didn't go look. No one other than the helicopter pilots went looking for survivors. The young man's father was rescued by them but he had been left for hours with no help.

More possibly could have been saved if the ambulance helicopters took off immediately. They didn’t show up until much later.

The rescuers on the ground confirmed in multiple media reports that they verified that everyone was already deceased when left behind.

NP but are you arguing that the tour guides weren’t brave and weren’t looking for survivors? I sure hope I am misunderstanding your comment.

We’ll never know if more could’ve been saved if air helicopters got there first. But multiple people confirmed the 8 left on the island were deceased. The volcano erupted at 2:11 PM. The first helicopter (the local tour operators who acted quickly, not official rescuers or trained medical professionals) got there at 3pm. Everyone left well after 4pm and at that time, they were all accounted for and deceased.

This is the most detailed account of the rescue effort I’ve found so far: https://www.australiangeographic.com.au/topics/science-environment/2020/09/what-really-happened-happened-on-whakaari-white-island/
