What would cause someone from a normal background to become a religious zealot?

It seems you are an extremist as no one is allowed to question anything about your beliefs without being attacked your anger and replies in this thread are appropriate and unless you want to actually answer the question you should maybe skip the thread. Or you can share why you went from maybe attending Church with your family a few times a year or even weekly to posting about it daily on social media, labeling yourself not just as a Christian, but a Child of God, multiple references to being washed in the blood, a quiverfuller, and anti LBGTQ anti you were never any of these things before?

This is mental illness. The Christian family guy may be out there, but he seems more well adjusted than this poster.

Dang that truth telling really has you all a quiver with ire.

You have to admit, OP’s post is really strange.

Nothing strange about the post at all, You just don't like Christianity being questioned, and likely hold the same beliefs as the friend being discussed. Instead of being able to articulate why your beliefs or justified or why OP shouldn't be concerned about a stark change in behavior or thinking you resort to name calling , mocking and bullying, which are cult/extremist tactics.

That was my post, and I most certainly do NOT hold the same beliefs. This is so very weird. Stop accusing internet strangers of bizarre things you fabricate, just because they disagree with you.

PS. All these fabrications about me, together with your bizarro psychological interpretations of my post, suggest that you’re doing the same thing to your old “friend.” After this nonsense, why should we believe any of your posts?

OP’s whole starting premise, that this man is a zealot or extremist, is totally off-base. He could be a homophobe (if we are to believe OP’s stalkerish rolling revelations of fb posts and tweets, none of which appeared in her op), which is bad, but doesn’t make him an extremist.

Several other posters have said the same thing—that this man isn’t a zealot just because he has 4-5 kids and is a homophobe. But where’s the playground fun in that, it’s hard to gang up on someone who’s just a run-of-the-mill wingnut.

As I thougt you are a sockpuppeting troll, just looking to argue and derail the thread.

Yes, you replying to yourself many times has said the same thing, and also called me names when you didn't succeed in getting the thread deleted you decided to go into full derailing mode.

That's really scary. Terrified for their children, whoever they are.

DP—the OP didn’t mention any homophobic remarks and only theorized the guy was a quiverfuller based on his 4-5 kids. Only in later posts, does he/she say he is a homophobe and definitely a quiverfuller. Why did he/she bury the lede? The initial description of the guy didn’t seem extreme to me. Maybe a little cringe, but not extreme.

Is Facebook friend really this extreme? Large jump from 4-5 kids and loves Jesus to this kind of abuse.

You read between a lot of lines for that one!

I don't know, and I hope not, but I do think he and his wife are involved in Quiverfull because of what was posted. Unfortunately, I can not read further Tweets, because he deleted his account after getting into a debate with someone about children and pregnancy. I didn't get to read the full thread before he deleted.

Ask the moderator. There are lots of posters saying that 4-5 kids, being homophobic, and attending church more than twice a year isn’t zealotry.

You accusing posters of things that aren’t true is pretty weird, though. And casts doubt on anything you say about this guy.

There’s been thousands of great studies on the topic of how so many Muslims in the ME have turned to religious extremism/zealotry. I’m sure there’s some applicability that cuts across religious and cultural lines.

DP. Generally those studies talk about rapid cultural and economic dislocation. The same factors that led Germans and Italians to support fascism—a desire for certainty. OP hasn’t demonstrated that her acquaintance was affected by any of that.
