Mask rule at your preschool

Anonymous
I am trying to decide between two preschools taking different approaches when it comes to masks. I know that it's unlikely that preschool age kids will be able to wear masks properly all day. Given that the research seems to show that kids this age do not spread it as effectively, I am ok with that risk. I am more concerned about adults. Is your preschool requiring the teachers to wear masks at all times, or just certain times/places? I am trying to get a sense of what the norm is.

Masks are worn by teachers during pick-ups/drop-offs & anytime a child becomes symptomatic while in care. Children are not wearing masks.

Ours will have all the adults in masks. Not required for the 2-4 year olds.

Adults wear masks all day. Children wear them all day except while eating, napping & playing outdoors.

Adults wear masks all day at ours. The kids don't (at a center with kids five and under). They're not discouraged from wearing them, but not required to, either.

No mask requirement for adult caregivers is a complete deal-breaker, IMO.

Staff and kids in the 3 and up room are required to wear masks at all times. The kids can take them off to eat. I’m not sure about naptime. We are going back August 1 but some children have been there minus a few weeks in March. The mask rule for kids is more recent.

Also parents are not allowed in the building and are required to wear masks for drop off/pick up

Children are not required to wear masks. The staff wear masks in the main areas of the building where adults tend to congregate (parents dropping off kids, staff members collecting kids from parents, admin staff taking temps, etc) but the teachers are not required to wear them in the classrooms. I’m okay with that, because each class is being completely self contained, so each teacher is only with that one specific group of kids. They are all in the same room together all day, breathing the same air, what good is one person wearing a mask?

Same, and parents are not allowed in the building.

Correct.

Day camp, so not exactly the same, but counselors wear masks at drop off/pickup and whenever they’re around other groups of kids/counselors. Kids don’t wear masks. Counselors don’t wear masks when they are alone with just their group of kids.

I think there are advantages to babies and toddlers seeing a caregiver’s facial expressions and speech, so I’d be ok with them not being masked 100% of the day.

Same, except ours is requiring them on the playground as well for kids and adults.

Adults must wear a mask at all times.
Parents can't come in - they must drop kids off outside.
Everyone - adults and kids must have their temps taken before going in. Parents must wait for the kids to get the all-clear to go in before leaving.
If a kid shows any symptoms they are immediately removed from the group and the parent called to pick them up.
Kids can wear masks or not, as they want.
They are encouraged to not take mass transit to school if possible.

The preschool is only allowing five kids in a class. DD was out of preschool from March through late June, until a spot opened up for her. There are three classes of five each, but they don't inter-mingle at any point.

There used to be a rule about "no hugging or kissing school friends" that was not at all enforced but now it is.
When the kids are playing outside and someone walks by too close to their fence, they all shriek and point, while screaming "Six feet, SIX FEET!" The exception to this is if the person walking by isn't wearing a mask, in which case all the 4 year olds scream "Mask! MASK! Where's your MASK?" and essentially shame the person into putting it on.

Ours says masks are optional for all. But the teachers wear them at pickup/dropoff.

I was basically the only one who sent my 4 year old with a mask. He was good at compliance the first several weeks but now he follows what the teachers do- at pickup and dropoff. I think if it were required and everyone was wearing one the whole time, he would still wear it.
