seatbelt won't latch - DYI repair?

Anonymous
Has anyone fixed a seatbelt that won't latch? (Our car is a 2015 Highlander).
Is this something that can easily be fixed DYI? A link to good instructions would be great if possible.
How much would it be to have fixed in a garage? Thanks!

I would not do this myself, and I'm pretty handy.

Do not DIY this. You/your passengers lives are worth more than your imagined cost savings.

No. No. No. No. No. No.

Essential safety equipment is not the place to DIY.

Just buy the entire seatbelt assembly and swap the pre-tensioner to the new one. It’s a single17mm bolt that anchors each end of the belt to the floors and the seat frame.

Be careful disconnecting and reconnecting the pre-tensioner. Disconnect the battery before doing so. An electrical contact arc can potentially set them off, and they ARE an explosive.

Shine a flashlight into the part you put the buckle into (i.e. the receptacle). Probably there is an obstruction in there. Try spraying compressed air in it to see if it dislodges it. If possible, try to shake it out.

Isn't it only the front seats with pre-tensioners?

Yeah I was going to say seatbelts are pretty easy. Try cleaning out the buckle and see if that fixes it. If not, depending on the vehicle you could probably pull one from a junkyard pretty easily. Or the Pick-a-Part in Fredericksburg will pull parts for you at a nominal fee. Then just swap it in; they're almost always just one big bolt.

Seat belt should be covered under lifetime warranty. Take it to the dealership. Read this below:
Toyota also has a Corrosion Warranty (5 years and no mile limit) as well as a Roadside Assistance guarantee program (3 years/ 36,000 miles). The manufacturer also has a Seat Belt Lifetime Warranty, which covers repairs and replacements of the seat belts as long as you own the car.
