Change HS course selection due to DL?

DD, a rising 10th grader, is supposed to take orchestra (violin) for the arts graduation requirement, she has finished PE and tech in 9th grade and is doing health in the summer. But knowing MCPS will be doing DL till Jan, should be considering switching to sth else? What are the other better Arts options for DL ? How’s the spring orchestra experience? DD is very interested in orchestra, she was in one in middle school, but is would be hard to fit it in later years due to the schedule

My rising 10th grader dropped her art class for this coming year back in the spring in anticipation of this. Chose another elective that planned to take as a junior and will take art instead as a junior. But she is genuinely interested in her art class and wants to really do it rather than a virtual version.

Yes DD is genuinely interested in orchestra, and is only able to do it one year, she has a lot of required courses in junior/senior years

Can she take one of them as a sophomore instead? Might be worth reaching out to guidance counselor to ask. I’m sure my DD will be only sophomore in class, but that’s fine especially since virtual.

Curious why her schedule seems so packed. My rising senior has been taking a tough schedule but has still been able to do orchestra and a language every year.

How do you do this? My daughter is signed up for ceramics, but since I don’t plan on buying a kiln I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a no go.

She emailed counselor (it was while school was still in session and before the date to make changes to schedule so got a quick response) and counselor let her change to something else. I’m guessing might have to wait at this point until staff is “back”. Not sure. She might be limited to classes that have openings, but there is usually movement among classes in first few weeks so something is likely to open up if patient.

Thanks so much. My daughter is a rising 9th grader so she has no clue who her counselor even is!

Where does she go to school? The quality of the experience is dependent on the teacher. At Churchill I would say online would be great because Mr. Sanz is simply amazing but I cannot speak to other schools.

She is in IB, so lot of required courses for the diploma, including at least 3 years of language

She goes to Richard Montgomery, how do they make orchestra work?
It must be disappointing without the concerts/competitions, that’s a big part of the experience

I think photography is an art course that may adapt well to virtual.
