| We make just enough money that we won’t qualify for needs-based aid, but DS’ impressive stats might make him competitive for merit aid at some universities. Do we still need to fill out FAFSA for merit aid consideration? |
| That is very school dependant. Research or email the school he is applying to. |
| FASFA is not hard. just do it. |
| Some schools require you to do the form even if you don't think you will qualify. |
| I never filled it out, but will doitthisyear. |
| It is school specific and hard to figure out without calling sometimes. I asked at a forum that included several college FA officials whether not qualifying for need-based aid would render a student less likely to get a merit scholarship. They said no, fwiw. We did the FAFSA and my kid did end up getting merit awards from 2 schools. |
| I did not fill it out and my son got merit aid at every school. |
OP here, thank you everyone for your response. I’ll call the schools on DS’ list. |
| Just to clarify, there is no harm in completing the application, correct? No negative impact on anything? |
| We got state FA grants and institutional FA grants at $160k hhi. |
Not all schools have need blind admissions. I also hated giving out so much data. The CSS is much worse. |
No. Not at all. I really don’t understand why people are so weird about it. It takes like 20 minutes to do. |
| There is no single answer Op |
I agree about giving out all the info. I guess we either have to get over that or say in-state only. OP, sorry for hijacking your post! |
Thank you! |
