I used baby shampoo and wash with SLS!

Help - I just found out that the shampoo and wash I have been using on my baby contained Sodium Laureth Sulfate. I have heard that this is dangerous for babies! I am so concerned that I this may have harmed my baby. I have thrown the products away. Does anyone know the effects of this chemical?

No need to panic! You can find out more about sodium laureth sulfate from the Environmental Working Group Cosmetic Safety Database. I'm not sure if this link will work, but try http://www.cosmeticdatabase.com/ingredient.php?ingred06=706089¬hanks=1. If not, go to http://www.cosmeticdatabase.com and do a search for sodium laureth sulfate. On their hazard scale it's a 2, which means low hazard. I hope that makes you feel better. You can also use the database to help you find safer prodcuts--or at least those w/ fewer questionable chemicals. Check out their baby care info at http://www.cosmeticdatabase.com/browse.php?maincat=babycare. Really, no need to panic.

You realize that all Johnson's baby soaps have this in it? We've been putting this stuff on our babies for decades. Hospitals use in for "babies first bath", and use it in the NICU and baby nursery. Obviously it's not *that* dangerous. Or, maybe it is and we've been doing tons of harm to our children! Well, either way, try not to worry and just buy differently from here on out.

Can anyone recommend some brands they like that don't contain this "dangerous" chemical? I've been using Johnson's baby wash on my 15-month old DD since day 1. I'm not totally panicked, but would like to switch and would love a recommendation on what people like to use.

I just took my newborn to her first ped appt and the doctor specifically mentioned not using the J&J products because they (and many other brand name products) contain Phalates which have recently been studies and derided as dangerous. California Baby and Avalaon Organic products are phalate free.

We have always used California Baby, it's mild and smells good.

We use California Baby also. I always used to get it at Whole Foods, but recently I've seen it at Target too. Go to any natural food store or co-op and just look at what they have; most of their products will be Phalate and SLS free (most! not all, so still read your labels!).

Why doesn't California Baby rate safer on the EWG?

I like Bert Bee's Baby products too. Also SLS free. DH makes fun of me for being so picky about our products and always reminds me that we used J & J growing up and survived. He has a point!
