| Anyone have recommendations for a 13 year old who is interested in American History, but isn't quite ready to read large, complicated tomes. She's interested in topics relating to civil war, great depression, WW2. She's specifically looking for Non-Fiction. Thanks! |
Ron Chernow's Grant, Hamilton and Washington. I think she will understand them. Dearest Friend about the letters written by John and Abigail Adams to each other. |

Great non-fiction books for that age are (auto)biographies:
Up from Slavery: an Autobiography - by Booker T. Washington I Have Lived a Thousand Years - by Livia Bitton-Jackson Through My Eyes - by Ruby Bridges Black Boy - by Richard Wright The Story of My Life - by Helen Keller Coming of Age in Mississippi - by Anne Moody Behind Rebel Lines: The Incredible Story of Emma Edmonds, Civil War Spy - by Seymour Reit |
|
The War That Saved my Life
Blood on the River: Jamestown 1607 The Diary of Patience Whipple |
| Beverly Cleary (author of the Ramona books) has two great memoirs of the depression and WWii eras, perfect for a 13 year old. 5th Chinese daughter is a classic memoir of the same era in San Francisco. |
I wasn’t thinking along these lines, but such great ideas. I’ve never heard of 5th Chinese Daughter... it looks wonderful. |
Thanks. I actually want to read these myself, but they’re probably too advanced for my DD. |
