Why can’t MCPS stagger the start times for distance learning?

If the younger kids learned from 8 to 12 and the older kids from 1 to 4 each day then if families needed, the older kids could help the younger kids with their morning school. Are the schools considering something like this?

Tired: teachers teaching kids
Wired: parents teaching kids
Inspired: bigger kids teaching littler kids

OP--that's actually a great idea!!

First of all, why are little kids 'in school' for 4 hours and the older kids for only 3?
Older kids have longer school days, and homework (at least, in the good old days they did). I, for one, want my older kid to stick to that routine.

What are the younger kids doing while the older ones are taking their classes?

The older ones often have a lot of coursework outside of class.

Can you give a specific example of what you are suggesting? Is it like 6th graders come at 8 am, teach a class of K kids, then do their own class at 1? I truly can’t imagine what you are asking.

I think that the idea is that Karla, aged 10, helps Larla, aged 6, with Larla's schoolwork in the morning, and then Karla does her own schoolwork in the afternoon, while the rest of Karla's and Larla's family tries to maintain their paid employment.

No dice.
Karla is not a teacher, and, in fact, might impede Larla's learning. Come on, people, don't be ridiculous! The only kids remotely able to help would be high schoolers, but they need to do their own schoolwork, and a lot of it.

That’s exactly what they did this spring.... Elementary classes were in the morning and middle and high school in the afternoon.

I mean, some parents on here want 6 hours straight of Zoom so that wouldn’t be possible.

No. HS kids need a full schedule. If school was in session, they would be expected to be in school the whole day. It’s not their job to babysit younger siblings. They need to learn as well and have 7 real classes to cover.

Have they announced distance learning/school hours yet?

Some do, it depends on the school.

why wouldn't it be a full day for all kids?
