I stepped on my dog

Accidentally. She was curled up at the base of my chair and when I stood up I didn’t see her. She made a terrible yelp unlike any I’ve ever heard before. I don’t even know which part of her body I stepped on. She’s 8 years old and 30 pounds. I gave her a ton of love and she’s back asleep at my feet. Does this mean she’s okay?

I have a small chihuahua mix (17 pounds) and I’ve accidentally done this too. It’s heartbreaking and thankfully he’s never been seriously injured!

Thank you! I feel so bad.

I did the same once, too. She had arthritis and so many other issues it was impossible for me to tell if I actually did more damage. IIRC, I took her to the vet for acupuncture and laser therapy (yes, I'm probably a sucker) to address all her aches and pains.

Anyway, I know it's heartbreaking. Sneaky little darlings, aren't they?

My family has done this many times. Today she fell asleep with her snout resting on one of desk chair wheels. They like to be close (shrug). It’s hard not to when they get up in your space.

The dog is probably fine. Do not worry unless tomorrow something seems off. It may have been more of a shock or a pinched piece of skin then an injury.

I've done this a few times. Some dogs (beagles) are real drama queens/kings and will yelp so dramatically you think their spine has been severed. But 10 seconds later, it's forgotten.

I swear mine sleeps where he’ll get stepped in on purpose so he doesn’t accidentally get left behind.

Just look for signs of injury - limping, tenderness, etc. The yelp probably kept you from fully stepping.

Lol! Owner of a huge drama queen beagle and can confirm. I think almost everyone has stepped on their dog at some point. Mine is never any worse for the wear.

OP your dog is probably fine. Just watch for changes in behavior. It was really cute to read this thread.

Thank you everyone! Op here, my dog is fine and still resting with her head propped next to my foot.

I have a huge dog and have stepped on him many times. He always yelps like a baby but it’s never been an actual issue.

Of course every time I do it I give him a ton of love and attention. Probably feeding that behavior, lol.
