Jen Hatmaker

I have read all of Jen’s stuff (pre cookbook); and I don’t remember her ever talking about body image. If anything, she presented herself as confident since birth.

But “your precious body will see you through” does sound a lot better than, “One day you will sell sex toys and vag lube online to strangers. But you’ll need the money to travel and visit your boyfriend - a closeted commercial actor whose claim to fame is the grump grandpa that discovers cat litter.”

When you know better you’ll do better, Sis.

This was a huge part of her initial appeal to me- her books about faith never veered into body insecurity or tired tropes about feeling chubby and unlovable, which were so common in the 80s (thanks Cathy comic strip). She came across in her writing as funny and confident IN HER FAITH. She was changing her corner of the world for God, no matter how inconvenient and awkward and messy. No snark here.

But the phase Jen is in now, of the perpetual marketing of an anemic lifestyle brand, devoid of any real joy or meaning, is what brought many of us to this board. To discuss if what we were seeing was really happening. To wonder, anonymously, why her newer fans were (are) so virulent and outright mean. To question if she wrote about true things.

Jen is making a hard pivot to something new cause there’s an opportunity there, at least in her mind. It’s transparent and embarrassing and dumb but that’s what she needs to do these days to keep the old machine limping along, I guess.

I'm wondering the same thing! She's taking a break from her podcast and I think other people are hosting it.

Oprah invited her to a conversation about weight and body image, and this witch literally says to us, “Yes, this is a problem I USED TO HAVE.”

Why wasn’t this ever mentioned in your word salad memoirs, Sis? Why can’t you show us a throw back pic of you, the “big” girl with all your skinny friends? Or a pic where you’re painfully thin from starving yourself? You can’t because you’re lying.

And you won’t say, “Yes, this is a problem I CURRENTLY HAVE.”, because you’re a jerk.

She returned to her podcast on Friday. While she did not address their future, it appears they are going for the “rehab redo” and staying together. She said a few days after she found out he was fired he went to a 45 day inpatient treatment program. I found it telling that she didn't say “after i found out he had been lying for years” she simply said “after i found out he had been fired”.

She then goes on to say things like “when Aaron got home from treatment”…”Aaron texted me this morning” (to encourage her about the podcast)…”Aaron and I were watching tv the other night”…etc

So appears they did not go the Jen Hatmaker path with an immediate divorce. Assuming they will spin this into a marriage redemption story.

Jen’s latest podcast is “for those OF US who grew up in an extremely restrictive patriarchal environment.” Ummm … to quote someone above, where in all of her previous word salads and memoirs has she EVER talked about how she grew up in a patriarchal home? Based on the stories I’ve heard, her dad was THE BEST EVER and he was so adoring and so affirming and just so so dear. But now, all of a sudden, like her body angst which just recently appeared, she is now claiming to have grown up in the patriarchy.

ANC was built in her own image. If Jen suffered under “patriarchy” that’s a bit rich. She’s such a toxic fraud.

Jen is like a weasel hovering around the edges of whatever the popular zeitgeist is of the moment looking for any way to glom on and make some money.

She’s like a vampire.

Her cookbook was full of calorie busting comfort food (which is undoubtedly delicious) and she’s had an obvious tummy tuck but now she’s some sort of noble expert regarding body health and wellness with tons of hard earned wisdom she can now charge the masses for?

Hilarious. This would also allow Jen to appeal to the anti-evangelical segment of her audience since the kind of evangelicalism she supposedly grew up in is usually very supportive of Israel.
