How many IVF cycles before you successfully delivered?

Anonymous
I am starting my journey down the ART path. I've only had an initial consultation but I'm already starting to think that maybe many cycles or years of fertility drugs are not for me. My issue seems to be AMA because all of my tests are normal. I conceived naturally and gave birth 20 months ago. For mothers of AMA, how many IVF cycles did it take before you successfully delivered? Did you use your own eggs? I would really appreciate any and all responses. TIA.

I think it's really hard to generalize. What did your doctor tell you to expect? How long did you TTC for #1?

Agree that you can't generalize. Most people will be successful within 3-4 tries.

We were successful on our 2nd try, using my own eggs.

3 total cycles. 2 fresh, one frozen. I was 39. Had m/c at 9 weeks on first fresh cycle.

I am almost exactly the same as the pp.

3 cycles, 2 fresh, 1 frozen:

As an FYI (because I think a lot of this depends upon how well you stim, how well your embryos do, etc.)

I was 40 yo when we started.

IVF#1(40 yo)- 11 eggs retrieved, 10 fertilized (NO ICSI), 6 (day 5) blasts transferred--BFP, 13 week m/c due to Trisomy 18.
IVF#2(41 yo)- 16 eggs retrieved, 11 mature, 9 fertilized (NO ICSI), 6 (day 5) blasts transferred-- BFN
IVF#3 (the day before my 42nd birthday)- 10 eggs retrieved, 9 fertilized (NO ICSI), transfer postponed b/c of mild OHSS. 5 (day 5) blasts and 2 (day 6) blasts frozen via vitrification.
Frozen Embryo Transfer (42 yo)- 7 embryos survived freeze thaw, transferred 6 at the equivalent of 5dpo, became pregnant with 3, lost 1, carried b/g twins to term (37 weeks-no complications)

I agree, it's hard to generalize, because based on the current responses, I feel very fortunate. I did 3 IUI's (age 40/41) - 2 were BFN's, and one was considered a chemical pregnancy. At age 41 I decided to do IVF - 3 eggs retrieved, 2 transferred on Day 3 (no ICSI). One egg took (used my own), and I now have a beautiful son. So you never know. I was so discouraged when they only retrieved 3 eggs and only 2 were good enough to transfer (1 was an 8 cell, 1 was a 7 cell), but it's like they say - it only takes one! I was 42 when I delivered, which is way past being considered "AMA" - I was called a "geriatric" mom!

What does "AMA" mean? I'm sorry, I can't keep all of these acronyms straight!

My stats:

BOTH IVF Cycles were BFP

Age: 38.5yrs - Retrieved 21 eggs - transferred 2 blasts (5 day embies) and got pregnant with a singleton (now my 2 yr old girl)
Had 7 blasts frozen and none took.

Age: 2 months shy of 40 yrs old - Retrieved 22 eggs - transferred 2 blasts and got pregnant with boy/girl twins who are now 4 months old. (2 blasts frozen)

GOOD LUCK!!!

Two cycles of IVF, age 41, prior baby through IUI--1st round no fertilization, used ICSI for second round, got PG. Have beautiful baby girl.

My RE told me that for women even of AMA if you have had a baby, it is more likely you will conceive. FWIW, I was breastfeeding at the time too, and had borderline FSH, and got PG. It will happen for you. Looking back, it is all worth it.

OP here. Thanks so much for sharing your stories and best wishes to those of you still trying. What does ICSI mean? Sorry, this is all new to me.

ICSI is when the embryologists inserts the sperm directly into the egg with an instrument.
