Had my 40 week appointment today and they did an ultrasound to check growth and fluid around the baby. Measurements estimate that baby is 8lbs 10oz.
I didn’t have a scan this late with my first so I’m curious to accurate they may be. The tech said it could be a half pound up or down from that. Any anecdotal experiences? |
| Famously inaccurate. Famously. |
| I had an induction on my due date because the scan showed the baby a full pound heavier than he actually was. |
|
My first was estimated to be about 7lbs at 38w and was born at 6lbs2oz 2 weeks later. My second was estimated to be half a pound heavier than she was when born the next day.
As PP said, famously inaccurate. |

Incredibly inaccurate.
So much so that I don't know a single person it has been accurate for. |
| I have 4 children, IME my growth scans have always been quite accurate. Usually within 10 ounces of actual birth weight. |
I've told this story before but I know one person who had an accurate weight guess (not based on a scan) - her doctor told her the baby would be about 7 1/2 lbs and when she was born she was 7lbs 8oz. My friend told her doctor at the 2 day appointment "I can't believe you could tell that just based on feel!" and the doctor admitted she tells everyone their baby will be about 7 1/2 lbs because most babies are about 7 1/2 lbs.
|
| I had a scheduled C anyway so I didn't care much. Last growth estimate was anywhere between 8 lbs and 12 lbs. Kid was 9 lbs 12 oz. |
| my 8 lbs 2 oz baby was said to be under 7 lbs when they looked while I was in labor. |
| 36 week scan baby was 80th percentile. At 39 week delivery, baby was 90th percentile. |
Mine were both accurate. First girl measured large, second measured small. Three years later and this is still the case. |
| Told me baby was already 8 lbs at 38 week appt. She was born at 41.5 weeks - 7 lbs. No IUGR or placenta issues, just nonsense guess work. |
| I was told my baby was tracking 40th percentile and would be 7-8 lbs. he was born in May at 5 lbs 15 oz and it was a whole thing because he was labeled “small for gestational age” and I was told there could’ve been something wrong with my placenta, etc. and this was after getting NUMEROUS scans due to the baby being breech. So I’d say they are wildly inaccurate. |
10 Oz is a ton when you are talking snooty s 7-8 lb baby. |
| Tech told me baby would be big, about 8-9 lbs. she was under 6 lbs at birth. |
