Seems a bit reactionary.

Not really, maybe for HS as a 'scared straight' tactic.
But I can tell you seeing police at my ES school always felt very wrong, unless it was because of a mandated reporter case or the like. Why are you having the police talk to a 7 year old having difficulties at home and emotionally? What I am worried about would be pulling police from the street. I support STRONG police reform, not booting them. |

My H is a cop... he thinks it's a good plan. Usually people not fit to be put on the streets need to be put "somewhere" and schools is one of those places.
Hire counselors, not cops. |
| Also, since it doesn't look like you'll have critical mass of kids IN schools for at least a while, seems like a good redirection of resources. |

I taught at one of the worst HS in this city. We didn't have cops in the building, but they were definitely posted up in a cruiser across the street. We had unarmed security guards and people known as behavior techs. They were pretty imposing, size-wise, and they got the job done 90% of the time. Ever so often, we'd need the real cops to come in. Usually it was for a brawl involving dozens of students or a if a student brought in a gun.
I don't think taking them out is a bad idea at all. |

Haven't you heard: what schools ?
That is so ancient history. The new thing is schools are not safe for teachers so they aren't going to be used to educate the tens of thousands of children In two to three years, when still there is no vaccine, but on top of it no 7 -10 year old in DC can read or add and subtract, then how will you teach them On top of fact that many were behind grade level to start with The US is about to have an illiterate work force that is functionally unemployable for the 21st century |
|
They transferred the school security contract back to DCPS.
They didn’t take a single officer out of the schools. |
That will make Betsy DeVos very happy because this is her plan. Smart educated people stop being Christian evangelicals, so (white) evangelicals want to destroy public schools. This is what DeVos and her evangelical tribe wants. It’s why they want her at that agency. |
Ironic that almost all the Charters in DC were first to say not going back, yet on TV she only talks about how public school students should go back, why not the Independent and charters. You're right about the public students someone has to be the coivd fodder for the future, because if we don't get our shit together and follow rules & take precautions Covid is not going anywhere. |

Just like on the streets, police don't necessarily prevent crime, they arrive after a crime/incident is over.
|
You can blame most of the illiteracy on our ineffective reading curricula and poorly trained teachers. |
Er, no. It’s an early childhood problem — language exposure, secure environment, etc. |
