| My doctor strongly advised me to stop eating canned tomatoes while trying to get pregnant (something about the BPA lining the cans and the acid in the tomatoes) and I am having trouble finding a good alternative. I have tried the Pomi boxed/tetrapak tomatoes that they sometimes sell at Whole Foods, but I don't like them much. They are OK when they are just one ingredient in a recipe, but not nearly as good as te Muir Glen tomatoes when I'm making a pasta sauce. Anyone find any other non-canned tomato brands? I know I can just switch to bottled tomato saude, but it isn't nearly as good... |

Trader Joe's also sells the boxed tomatoes. They add a few ingredients (basil, garlic, I think) , so it's not just tomato sauce. But I've made the switch as well in an attempt to get BPA out of our lives.

I like Pomi, myself. I also buy an organic brand, can't remember the name, of crushed tomatoes in a tall glass jar. But I prefer the Pomi chopped tomatoes and that's generally what I use. I manage to make them taste as good as Muir Glen in the cans

The boxes have cans too.... but just an FYI - ALL CANS have the bpa, not just tomatoes. |
13:39 here. This is true, but BPA leaching is worse with highly acidic foods. That's why experts recommend avoiding canned tomatoes in particular. I thought of that recently when I bought sliced jalapenos, which must be incredibly acidic also. I don't buy sliced jalapenos anymore unless I can find jarred. |
| How do you know the prepared jar sauces weren't made from tomatoes that came from a can? |

I don't... that is another reason that I have been trying to suck it up and use the Pomi tomatoes (or just have pasta with olive oil). But I will try the trader joes boxed tomaoes. -- OP |
| Op, fresh tomatoes! Or tomatoe juice - campbell's works great mixhed with some fresh tomatoes. |

I know that Eden brand states that their cans do not have BPA lining - we have switched to their canned beans for this reason, although I don't think they make tomato products. |

Eden Foods does make tomato products, but the tomato cans are NOT BPA-free like the beans are. Something about the BPA-free lining not standing up to the acid of the tomatoes.
I have switched to the Pomi tomatoes. Once I add garlic, onion, herbs, etc they taste great! |
