Early braces(7yr old)

Anonymous
7 yr old has severe(like share teeth) overcrowding. His adult teeth aren’t coming in because there is no room and teeth are getting impacted. Ortho is suggesting we start treatment in about 6months. This will include extracting baby teeth, expanders and eventually braces. I keep seeing on here that waiting is better and early braces are a scam, but DS issues seem pretty severe. Anyone had early braces and think it was worth it.

All I’ll say is that my child continued to lose teeth somewhat regularly until the time when they got their braces off. That was the winter of 9th grade. The orthodontist dubbed my kid “dentally delayed.” They wouldn’t remove their braces until kid stopped losing teeth. Orthodontist wouldn’t put the braces on until 7th. Kid had nasty teeth. So my point is that the orthodontist might not put braces on until they deem your kid’s teeth ready.

Get a 2nd opinion. We spoke with an ortho who wanted to do braces at 8, another who said they rarely do braces that early because kids palates are still in motion.

We did palate expander at 8 due to speech and sleep issues. Definitely worth it. For cosmetics? I would wait.

I had braces put in when I was 9 and honestly it was necessary. I had a terrible overbite, teeth were spaced unevenly, and there was crowding. The good thing about getting them early is that my braces came off around age 11.5/12. A lot of my friends still had braces at that age but I had already paid my dues so to speak.

Palate expander starting around age 7 or 8 for the same reasons. Then there was a break of a couple of years until all adult teeth came in, at which point braces started. The doctor wanted to do the palate expansion early because it's less painful.

For my daughter, she has been followed by an orthodontist since she was 6 - she has missing teeth. It was helpful because the orthodontist identified a problem that, because it was discovered early, was really easy to treat. It would not have been easy to treat had we waited. I was not billed for any of those orthodontic services. I will pay a flat fee for braces when the time comes.

Not a scam. Totally worth it. Kiddo did expansion and braces at age 6 for 18 months, now in second round of braces at age 10. Early intervention saved her month. Do it!

A second round at ten? Are you going to do a third round at thirteen when adult teeth come in?
