Dance Team Practice

My daughter is only 6 so we aren’t super competitive yet. I just got an email that they’re starting summer practices. It would be 12 girls together for an hour 2x per week. Am I a crazy person for thinking that’s an unnecessary risk at the moment?

No, you aren't. I wouldn't be doing that indoors - no way.

Is it indoors or outdoors? I would be ok with it outdoors.

No way. Not yet. Way too many kids together. I work with dance industry leaders and no one is recommending anything but private lessons in a very controlled environment yet. Major companies are not rehearsing. The entire ballet season has been cancelled through Spring 2021. Music industry people are only looking at concept videos from the choreographers. Even Broadway isn't rehearsing. Find a studio with better ethics. A 6 year olds dance team should not be rehearsing. They deserve at least as much protection as the adults demand.

What competition are they even prepping for? 99% have cancelled and will not resume until after the pandemic. What studio is this?

Thanks all. I just needed a sounding board. While I see your point about Broadway, many youth baseball teams have been practicing and have started playing (across the country) when MLB hadn’t even decided so for me it’s so hard to decide.

She competed last year and they started this early. It’s just another extracurricular with a team bonding aspect. They only do three competitions in the spring and 2 were cancelled this year. We are hardly on the Dance Moms path.

I just felt like a crazy person that I was the ONLY parent who thought this was strange.

No, not the same as baseball, this is indoors and more excursion. I know of only a small handful of competition companies that are holding events this year. Those are only being held because the venue is open so no refund for cancellations. I would be very very careful about this. Dance will wait. Do not let an overzealous owner rush you in with team as a hook. Team is their $ maker, especially the little ones. Trust your gut.

I don't agree but if i did, i would want max 6 kids outdoors only, 10 feet apart.

Honestly I'd just do private.

This is pretty typical for competition schools. Get out while you can.
