“Clearing classrooms” and SIP (lockdown) drills in the time of COVID

A friend brought this up on FB and I think it is worthwhile mentioning on DCUM. I’m not going to quote her verbatim to protect her family’s privacy and that of other individuals involved.

Her DC attends ES in MCPS.
She thinks his experience academically with DL was neither great nor terrible.
She felt the biggest benefit was that the virtual classroom did not need to be cleared due to out of control students. This process normally involves the children walking into a neighboring classroom because it is not safe for them to stay with the student who is in crisis. Since the neighboring classroom is already occupied by another class, the fleeing children sit on the floor tightly together.

She’s wondering how this would work when class sizes are supposed to permit social distancing. She hopes this is the end of classroom clearing as a strategy to deal with out of control students. However, she’s also wondering about the SIP drills and to be honest that concerns me as well. SIP drills are very important, but students can’t socially distance during them. Same with the extreme weather and fire drills now that I think about it.

Have kids mask up during a drilll.

During the real thing, which is rare, forego masks if there is no time.

"Kids can't have school during the pandemic because what about active-shooter drills?" is just about the worst indictment of US society that I can imagine this afternoon.

When I cleared my self-contained class (6-8 kids) we would just work in the hall.

But regular ed classes also get cleared as well.
